300' distance and other highway manners...

Don't want to start a war between truckers and the 4 wheelers....just got back from a tour of the midwest's Interstate highway system....I thought truckers were supppose to maintain a minimum 300 foot distance between trucks?.....I ran into packs of a half dozen semi's (Chicago area) that didn't have much more than a car or truck length between them.... couldn't get around them, posted speed limits were 10mph less than cars....so everyone is piling up behind these fellas, and they drive in both the slow and passing lanes....frustrating. Anyone ever heard of a trucker getting a ticket for being too close?
