Me and idsman75 shoot....

Well, me and idsman finally got together today. We went shooting at my buddies farm, and had lunch afterwards, (he bought), and it was a good lunch, not McDonalds.
I made him look at my collection before we went shooting, so now I cant lie about what I have or dont have cause he knows,
Since I'll be here till the end of August, and he'll be here a while, we will go again if he has time to go again. We didnt take a lot of guns, just 2. We took the 454 and my ugly Savage in 30-06. We sighted in the 454, which previous to this outing I had only tested for bullet performance, and hadnt shot at a target with it yet. It shot well. It likes my cast bullets better than the factory stuff, cool, but shoots both well. The Savage is incredibly accurate, shot it from a very close distance, same as the 454, but just wanted to get the sight close to where it belongs before putting the scope on, so it didnt make much sense to try and shoot it at a long distance. Makes 3 shots go into one big hole, if we do our part.
The thing that we did that really made an impression on me was we tested 3 bullets for penetration. I havent even told idsman the results of my calculations and measurements yet, so he might find this interesting too.
We used very tightly compressed newspaper held tight by duct tape. This paper had been rained on and dryed on purpose, made sure it was tight. It would not compress any further. Shot one round of factory Winch. 250 gr JHP 454 ammo into the paper, did the same with my cast bullet of 312 gr. 454, and the same with Remington core-lokt 150 gr. 30-06. Here are the results:
Winch. 454 250 gr. penetrated 4" and lost 58.4% of its starting weight.
Reload cast bullet 312 gr. penetrated 5" and lost 49.7% of its starting weight.
Remington 30-06 150 gr. penetrated 6" and lost 48.7% of its body weight.
Why is this important to me? Because it seems to me that I have indeed gotten my cast bullet load just right in both terms of power and hardness. The fact that it is only slightly less capable of penetration than an average weight bullet in a 30-06 rifle is not lost on me either. I'm not saying that its a rifle in performance, but that it would be a very good cartridge candidate to be used in a lever action, or even a bolt action if you wanted one. Well, I dont want to bore anyone with the other implications of the test results to me, but thought you might want to know how things went.
Its really nice that we can meet people here on GB, and even nicer knowing that when you get the chance to meet that same person "in person", that they will be exactly what you'd expect based on their presentation of themselves here. Idsman and I will surely be shooting some more together, and I hope that I will get the pleasure of meeting and shooting with more of you as I travel to North Carolina to Camp Lejune in the coming months. Today was a good day of shooting, life is good.

You and idsman75 gonna shoot the Postal Match together and witness each others targets?

I have to send a few bullets to a couple members here and have them test them for me. I tend to think I may have them so hard they are too hard, not too soft. Not sure about it at all right now. I talked to idsman about the postal match, but only briefly, I'm not sure about it right now. I dont know if I can shoot a handgun steady enough to compete effectively. After todays shoot I'm not sure I have enough time to practice to compete. I gotta practice some, and idsman is really busy, we'll just have to see what happens. I dont think we will be entering anything other than the .22 category at 15 and 25 yds. if we do shoot. I should tell you I'm really a rifle shooter. I'm only minute of deer with a handgun.

Hey dont feel bad, I was driving, he said he wanted to take me to lunch, I asked him where? He said Cracker Barrel? I said sure. I dont think he wanted to end up walking home, he, he, he! Nah, just kidding. This is Ft. Leonard Wood, aka Lost in the Woods, you only have one restraunt and a hitching post, well... not quite, but it sure seems that way if you arent from here I guess. Its probably cheaper to eat at a Cracker Barrel than anywhere else around here, unless you like killing yourself with a gut buster, God knows I dont need to be any fatter, I think he felt sorry for me after he saw what I drive, you gotta see my car some day. I took the training wheels off my son's bike after idsman left, and my son was learning to ride without them, he ran into my car, right into the fender. Me and my wife just stood there laughing cause of the expression on his face, and he wasnt hurt. He said, 'Its ok, I didnt hurt the car any'. That really got us laughing, he could have put a dent in it and I still probably wouldnt have noticed. I think he meant he didnt knock anything off of it that wasnt already falling off. Ask idsman if he felt safe riding in my car. The offer of lunch was probably just a cover so that we had to stop half way home and he could get out and make sure it still has four wheels. Ask him what one of the first things was he asked me about my car when he saw it, and see if I'm lying. He said, 'Is Bass Pro your sponsor'? Bumper stickers are great for body work, and Bass Pro has these really large ones, about 20" long and 12" high, with a bass on it. I have 2 of them and many smaller ones. I have a good time driving my car, helps me guage people's sense of humor as to how hard they laugh.

...from my cold dead fingers!!
What a BLAST! That .454 was a whole heck of a lot of fun. I'll admit that those 312 gr cast bullets left the hand feeling a little sore afterwards but talk about fun! Robsguns was quite the host so the least I could do was share some spicy grilled catfish with him. Okay, I'll admit it. I always check out the waitresses at the Cracker Barrel when I get to a new area that has one. There always seems to be a looker or two. I definitely saw one today. WOW!
Anyhow, back to the books. Maybe I need to look into getting a .454
hmmmmmmmmmm.....Any advice aglore?

Cool, I'm working on melting down the lead I got for the second time. The first time was just to get it melted down and cleaned up, and into manageable bars, this time its to get it cleaner, doesnt really need it, and into 2lb. cupcake form. I've decided that the big bars are a thing of the past. All of my stuff is now in 2lb., 8lb. or 7lb. form depending on what it is. The founders type I have is in 1 and 1/2 lb. form, just because I dont need to use such a large qty. for mixing. The ride was the Bass Mobile, thats what all my friends call it. Ford should pay me for having taken the emblems off, just to disassociate their name from it. Its hideous, but its so cool. Kind of like that song 'I like my women a little on the nasty side'.
Allen,
If you had offered me what you offered idsman about the .480 about 1 month earlier, I'd have an FFL on the way. I'd really like to try out the .480 too. I just dont have enough time left here to be fooling around with someone elses merchandise just now. I would like to try someones .480 sometime, try some tests to compare penetration, using the same alloy for casting, to compare apples to apples. Load some bullets up of the same weight with the same powders, all sorts of stuff. Course I will have to have my own before I can do all that, it would take forever. HMMM....another good reason to buy another gun! Of course I wouldnt have any trouble selling it after I was done, there are so many people that dont like all the recoil of the 454, they'd be clamoring for a nice used .480
Wait a minute, I think me wanting to use your .480 is even a better reason for me to come to Alaska for that hunt you were mentioning. Yeah, I think I can convince my wife next year that I need to leave for some cold weather therapy.
