I've just about run out of time to play with my toys, gotta start packing soon, PACKING SUCKS.
I have one more thing to do though, need to adjust the windage on my 9mm Makarov. I plan on doing it this weekend. I also plan on doing a penetration test on this round, just as I did with the 454, and the 30-06. I'll be using the same media, dry, compressed newspaper. The 454 if you recall penetrated 4-5" depending on the round used, and the 30-06 went 6". Anyone want to guess as to how far the Makarov will penetrate before stopping? Test will be conducted at a distance of about 3', a 95 gr. bullet will be the projectile. I'll be testing Winchester FMJ bullet, S&B FMJ bullet, and Master hollow point bullet brands. I may even do it tonight, kind of has me wondering, and curiosity gets the best of me. Make your predictions, we'll see who is the better guesser. I have no idea myself, but I figure 1". This round just doesnt seem to be that strong to me.

Haven't you heard of the one-shot zero? Put the gun in a Ransom rest, fire one round, then crank the sights over so they point directly at the hole you just made. Done. Just don't use the first round out of the mag, because that one's likely to be the flyer.

Except, of course, that different ammo may give different results. Oh well.

Yep, like I figured, I couldnt wait, went and did the test tonight. The difference between the hollow point and the FMJ bullets was barely meausreable. Penetration was 1 1/4". FMJ's stayed together very nicely, barely mushroomed, just deformed would be more accurate. The hollow point exhibited very good mushrooming effects, lead core was deformed in much the same manner as my cast bullets deform, wedge shaped frontal portion, base flat as an unfired bullet would be. I like doing these tests, think I'll do the .357 when I get time over the next several months, .38 special too. Might even get around to firing that .41 mag.
I sighted the Makarov in well too. It shoots dead center and two inches high. I didnt have to tap the rear sight enough to the right of the index mark the factory put on it to even misalign it completely. I believe if a man were capable of doing his job this gun would be deadly out to about 40 yds., as far as accuracy goes. It groups pretty tight at the 11yds. I was shooting at, within 1" offhand. It likes all the ammo the same too. I really like these guns, guess thats why I bought another.
