I was talking about this with some friends at work last night. And, I just was wondering what some of your responses would be. I know this vary from gun to gun, and type of conditions you were in, but how long do you spend cleaning your gun(s) before you put them away?

It depends on the gun. 5 minutes or so for a hand gun. Rifle cleaning varies considerably depending on design. My model 94, 5 minutes. My AK47, 10 minutes and both get cleaned again the next day.

Well, thats a tough question, because when I am cleaning my guns, its sort of like playing with a toy, it usually takes a lot longer than it should, and I'm not in a hurry to put it away. It takes me longer to decide to clean it, than it does to actually clean it. I put my guns that are dirty in the way, like on the dining room table, that way I have to clean them, and put them up. Yeah I know, I'm a redneck, with lousy furniture, and no safe, blah blah blah. It only takes about 10 minutes normally, 15 if I need to break it open to access the trigger group, and 30 minutes if its a revolver that is really nasty and has to come apart and be cleaned. Took me 9 days to clean a gun I bought once, and I dont want to relive that. Blackpowder cap and ball revolvers, they're the worst, by far, jeesh!

I sometimes spend up to an hour cleaning, and if I have purchased a used rifle, up to several hours going over it. I usually throw movie in the VCR and spend the afternoon cleaning two or three.

I would party with ya most anytime Rob, but I would like to know how you get 'em clean in 30 minutes or less! Mostly I clean rifles, and keep at it until the patches are white. Even using Butch's and J-B Bore Paste it takes me longer than that!

Oh that, Well, I dont usually shoot a lot of rounds, use Butch's Bore Shine, and have some pretty smooth barrel, I suppose. Mostly its probably that I dont shoot a lot of rounds before cleaning. I hate to clean really nasty guns, remember the 9 day thing.
