Navy= Airmen, Seamen, Firemen, constructionmen, is E3 or below. Technically it would be Seamen recruit E1, Seamen Apprentice E2, Seamen E3.

Third Class Petty Officer is an E4

Second Class P.O. is an E5

    First Class is an E6

Chief Petty Officer is an E7

    Senior Chief is an E8

    Master Chief is an E9

Where a Cpl. in the Army would just be refered to as Cpl. "Smith" a third class in the Navy would be refered to by rate. a boatswains mate is called a BM. so a third class BM would either be called petty officer Smith, or BM3 Smith. We do everything backwards of everyone else and I don't have any good reason why. If you need a chart send me your email address, and I'll try to emial the chart to you from work tom. if I can find it on the computer.

On the CWO side of the house, there is now a CWO-5

I forgot to add that an officer is generally called "Sir" but DWS backed me up with the details.

robsguns pointed out the CWO5, the Navy does not have the CWO5 yet, probably because it would take about 100 years to make CWO5. I know only one CWO3 and he's been in 28 years, he was an E8 before he went CWO. We also do not have a CWO1

Don't forget the Rear Admiral (Lower Half=equivalent to a Brigadier General) and Rear Admiral (Upper Half=Major General).

These are lots of fun in a Joint Command and you are trying to prepare seating arrangements! You end up calling for a promotion register to learn who outranks who.[}:)]

Hairy: You're right. I wish they'd reinstate "commodore", though; a unique rank worthy of Meerschaum, monocle and bagpipes

I am tempted to say that the Navy still does use the term commodore. It may not be an official rank but generally the C.O. of the base is refered to as the commedore, and I'm pretty sure I've been at sea when "the commedore" came aboard. This of course could be the old salty chiefs refering to any old salty officer I guess, so I could be wrong, but I think we even have a commodore parking spot at the base exchange and that was only built about two years ago.

Robs, Thanks for the links, that's what I was looking for.

Have a number of "career" family members, some Army, some Navy....confusing to know who has passed the other in rank....some gentle ribbing about who salutes who (and who has the better football team)...

    Commodore
Is a Senior Captain usally a Squardon Commander.
    AN exception to that.
My Commanding Officer @ FTG was a Senior Captain but had the title of Commodore.

That was a very interesting chart Ryan. Warrant officer seems like the ideal military rank since it appears to be a technical rating of some sort so I assume these officers don't actually take command of troops other than those personel assigned to their departmental specialty...and people have to call them sir and salute. Question: in the enlisted ratings there are two different sub divisions of sergeants in the E-8 and E-9. Using the Marines as an example, what are the differences between a 1st sergeant and a master sergeant and what are the differences between a sergent major and a master gunnery sergeant? There must be some reason for this division but I'm guessing each of them earn the same pay and have identical insignia. As a guy who never spent a day in the military I think this is my chance to find out the real story!

Mark: First Sergeants and Sergeants Major are typically administrative positions; Master Sergeants and Master Gunnery Sergeants are typically senior NCOs in line or technical MOS's.

Mark Marines like you asked do use a slightly different insignia, one has a diamond in the center (Master SGT and SGT MJG) the other has crossed rifles in the center (1ST SGT and Master Gunnery SGT) I could be backwards on which gets the diamond and which gets the crossed rifles, I'm sure one of our Marines on the board will correct me if I'm wrong. The more I look at it the more I'm pretty sure I'm wrong. My first command was 1/2 Navy 1/2 Marine but that was a while ago

In the Marines, First Sergeants and Sergeants Major are command positions, the top enlisted people in their organizations. (company-level for 1SGTs, battalion or higher for SGTMs.) If you have the same pay grade, but not the title, then you are likely holding a technician's or administrator's MOS. The command ranks are the ones with the diamond device (called a "lozenge") in the chevrons.

As far as the Army goes, E-9s don't gain a 4th rocker like Marines. The Sergeants Major there are called "Command" Sergeants Major, and what marines call "Master Gunnery Sergeants" they call plain Sergeants Major. Got me if I can remember what devices the Army sports, but a good rule to follow is, if a guy with a lotta rockers is telling you to do something, you'd better do it!

Dave: I think you may have it backward. First Sergeant has the diamond and Sergeant Msjor has the star; Master Sergeant has crossed rifles and Master Gunnery Sergeant has bursting bomb.

DWS- You're right, my roommate was in the marines (met him in my first command) I talked to him on the phone and he said just what you did. Us d**n sailors' always screwin' up the details...

Warrant officer is the best job in the Army.

    In the old days, you were appointed --- and couldn't command;
these days you are commissioned a warrant and can command.

Even in the old days you were respected by both officer and enlisted and still are. There are a few W-5's out there, and those that are even get their own parking space at the PX along with the CG!

Jim: Good to see you around. How's that Pantera bad boy???

Dave: I'm old Corps; when I first entered the service (1962), we wore brown shoes and there were still some guys wearing stripes without crossed rifles (an E5 back then was a staff sergeant).
