Researchers try to explain near-death experiences
Email story to a friend

Undated-AP -- Scientists are taking another crack at explaining what causes "near-death" or "out-of-body" experiences.

A new study suggests these experiences may be influenced by a portion of the brain misfiring under stress.

The study was led by a neurologist in Switzerland.

Researchers implanted electrodes to map brain activity in a woman who'd been having seizures.

They then applied electrical stimulation. Scientists say when they did so, the woman described herself as "floating" near the ceiling -- and looking down at her own body.

Researchers think a processing center in the brain known as the angular gyrus plays a role in the way the brain analyzes sensory information.

They think when it misfires, the result can be visions of floating outside of the body.

The findings are published in the journal Nature

Just when you think your out of the woods,a tree falls on you!

The poor scientists. They believe that everything meaningful can be proved by science, and worse, they believe that if it isn't scientifically proven then it isn't important.

Why is it that scientists are always ready to try to explain so many varying "theories", when with a belief in God-the answers are so visible!

I was watching a show the other day on either the history or learning channel about some guy the government was using for "remote viewing". He worked for the government for quite a few years, and it's obvious he was really good at what he did. Scientists can not prove or disprove what he does, but the government sure believed he could do it, enough to pay him for 20 or 30 years (or how ever long it was).

It's not what you know that gets you in trouble, it's what you know that just ain't so!

It may well be that there will come a scientific explanaition one day but the part the scientists never seem to address in these attempts is how so many of these people can describe the sophisticated medical techniques being performed on their unconscious bodies. They could only recount the things being done if these procedures were viewed from an angle (above) that they, the patient, could not have. Simply hearing the OR conversation would not give the level of detail these people are able to provide.
