Passports

Has anyone here had any experience in getting their passports? It has just come to my attention that while on deployment, instead of going off whoring on our single four day pass, married soldiers have the option of flying our wives into Bulgaria to meet us for a weekend.I have never applied for one and I am curious as to the process and time it takes to process. It looks like she would fly on the 28th of March so we have about a three week time limit to play with. Any help would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!!!!!! Thanks Guys

You didn't say where you are located at this time (maybe you can't), but you can handle it in person quickly at many central post offices in the USA - the larger ones that are distribution centers - assuming you have the pictures and documentation. But I need to add that even if you do that, the post office will send it to the passport office and they'll mail it to you. You don't get it right there, but going to the post office in person will save a couple of days and they will make sure everything is in order. For more info: http://travel.state.gov/passport_services.html [This message has been edited by Gordian Blade (edited 02-24-2002).]

Ooh, that's a tight one. Apply TOMARROW and if you are lucky, you will get it in time. They take a few weeks at least, sometimes up to 6.

IoW, you are likely to run into time constraints. Even the 'expedited' delivery is a matter of weeks. You can find the details on the Dept. of State website: http://travel.state.gov/passport_services.html Good luck!

Passports can be expedited for a few dollars more....Some countries require entry visa's, I've gotten these done in just a matter of days...of course now with the events of 9-11, it could take much longer. Passports are good for 10 years.

IOW--You can get passports on post. She may be able to do it even if she is a civilian. I had to get a passport for my deployment to Honduras. For some reason the Military ID doesn't work in Honduras. I got mine on post but that was Ft. Lewis.

Passport photos have to be of a certain size, but luckily now a lot of drug stores with one hour photo shops are offering the service. It does take some time once you've applied, and it does help to let anyone who will listen know when you'd like to be able to use it. They're a nice form of ID, and they last, what is it, 7 or 10 years? Mine has some time to go on it yet.

By the way, go ahead and get the passport photos done first. Don't wait until your first visit to a passport office for instructions. Find a passport photo place tomorrow, get two shots of the right size, and carry them with you at your first opportunity to apply. I forget what the fee is and how they want to be paid, but consider taking both some cash and a checkbook just in case. You want to get it right the first time.

You might want to check with your Congressional Rep.'s office. He or she can make it happen real fast and, given your circumstances, it's worth a shot.
