I am new to pistols. I went out to the range with a friend and shot his Romanian knockoff of a Walther ppk and was dead on. I went looking for one and came across the Walther p99. How does this compare? Is it good for self defence and general shooting?

I posted this in Ask the Experts and didn't get any responses, so I'll try here.

I got one of the first Walther P99s that came to the US. Of course, it has that horrible hump in the trigger guard. I noticed in Guns and Ammo that the new ones don't have the hump. Here's my question: Are there enough changes in the new P99s to warrant me selling the one I have and buying a new opne, or should I take the one I have to a gun shop and have the hump surgically removed?

I came across a P99 for sale and it looks good (military colors). I read some reviews on it and some user feedback and I had a few questions.

I believe it was very similar to this one:
    http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=125871514#PIC

It was the S&W 40cal. They said it had the option of a full pull for the first shot and a short pull for the rest.

    Questions:
    1. Is this a good model?

    2. Will the "ski hill" really be a problem? (I don't remember if it had one. I will check and get back to you)

    3. How can I tell if it has more options (like the AS model does)?

    4. Are their any issues that I should be looking for before deciding to purchase this gun?

    5. <Answered :)> Can this model shoot 9mm? (Picture 4 from the link reads "9mm and 40cal" does that mean it could shoot 9mm and 40cal or is it referring to the two different models for the paperwork?)

    6. and finally, by looking at the gun, how can I tell if it is a new model or an older model of the P99?

Thanks! Your expertise is much appreciated!
