The Preacher's Surprize

We had a deacons meeting last night. Our average Sunday attendance is around 800 folks, and we have 24 active deacons. The preacher wanted to be sure that the church was safe during worship. He wanted the doors locked during services, and one of us to remain in the back of the church in case someone came late. We've been doing that for the last 23 years, but without locking the door. He wanted the same system for the Sunday School Building during classes. That would be new, but is workable. The last thing he wanted he said was a hard thing to ask. He wanted to let the church pay for CHL classes for the deacons, and have them carry during all church activities. Of the 22 deacons present, 19 of them already had CHL permits, and were carrying at church. The other 3 were excited at the chance to take the class at church expense. I told him I knew of at least 40 other members who had permits, and I would approach them to see if the did or would be willing to carry during services. He asked me to go ahead.Needless to say, he was shocked! He made the statement, "I must have been more out of touch than I thought. But I don't want to upset members who may be anti-gun. They have a right to worship here also."What's your opinion. Should a man carry at church? Would you attend a church if you knew there were a lot of concealed weapon present? Speak up.

More preachers are armed than you realize.I've sold, traded and talked guns with manyof them. When the possibility exists that some Muslim fanatic might attack your place of worship (we are at war, after all)then arming against that possibility is perfectly reasonable. Lest my words be misunderstood,I mentioned MUSLIM FANATIC in the text of those Muslims at war with us, none otherincluded.

I would double-check the terms of your conceled carry permit. In Georgia you cannot carry in a church even with a permit.

It goes like this: I carry except where it is illegal to do so. Period. If I thought that God didn't want me to carry (and thus protect myself and my family) in His house, I would conclude that he doesn't want me to carry at all...

admin,In Texas, we can carry at church as long as they do not have a sign acording to PC 30.06 posted in plane sight, at the main entrance, in 1" block letters and contrasting colors in both english and spainish, that forbids it.Thanks for the interest!thesupermonkey,Nope, we're north of Dallas in Denton county.

Did they change that? Originally, CHL guns were prohibited in churches and no sign was necessary. It never mattered to me, anyway. I tote in church and the other members know it. I heard of a church in east Texas that was robbed one Sunday, and some members shot. They keep discreet guards posted now, law or no law.It always seemed to me that it ought to be up to the congregation whether to allow guns there, not the state.

Never seen or heard tell of a "shootout" between Concealed Carry Permittees! Why don't they allow legal carry on airplanes also? Bet that would solve a whole lot of problems in a hurry......but that may be too sensible and too easy. Think the criminals would get a Carry Permit? If so, we have a real problem!

Well.....MAY GOD HELP YOU IF ANYONE IN THAT CHURCH SHOOTS SOMEONE, cause the prosecuting attorney is going to rip someone a new pew warmer, GUARANTEED!! I am confident that if that should happen, it will be in the evening news for weeks.

dheffley, I am a pastor, and I carry, but in KY it is illegal to carry in a public place of worship. So, I don't carry at church. For some reason, wouldn't feel comfortable doing that, but that is just me. Don't know if any members do or not. Never asked. You said your church was in Denton? Our denomination runs a Children's Home in Denton. Nice place.

Here in Michigan it is also illegal to carry in church or school. I am an Irish Catholic, but I have to tell you that Father Sears likes to shoot more than a round of golf.

I am a Pastor, and have carried to worship for the last 5 years or so when I felt the need to do so. If you look at church history, you will find that a hundred years or so ago, church members and leaders were all armed with good reason to do so. I agree also that it should be a decision for the church membership and not the state. They are quick to point out the separation of church and state when it suits them to do so, but here is a case where it really should apply.

An armed Pastor might get a few more tithes, but could be misconstrued as an armed robber. Just kidding gentlemen. See ya in church.

just remember the highlander, you cannot remove their heads on holy ground!Just kidding again...I agree about the right to carry at church...My guess, if Jihad actually broke out with the full support of the Nation of Islam, Christian churches are probably the type of target that would gaurantee quick passage to allah for one of those miguided fanatic types....
