There is a lot of supporting evidence to show that neither Clyde or any of his "associates" ever used a Thompson. Clyde used the BAR (or the commercial variation known as the Monitor) and shotguns extensively.

Warner Brothers had a good number of Colt Thompson's (which were sold commercially) in their property department but very few BARs. It was also felt that the audience would easily recognize the famed Thompson as a "gangster gun" while many who had watch the countless WWII movies of the period would ahve been confused by the sight of a BAR in criminal hands, although in reality it was the weapon of choice for most of the hoodlums of that era of lawlessness.

Gangsters and police back in those days were faced with a problem that today is hardly worthy of consideration: Cars with thick steel bodies. As far as a .38 revolver was concerned just about any old jalopy was an armored car and even the .45 could not be counted on to reliably pierce the heavy door panels to get to the car's occupants while .30-06 ball round would do this easily. Shotguns were the weapon of choice for bank heists and close quarter gun fights, not the heavy and awkward to handle Thompson, which was slow to get into action.

Clyde used the BAR (or the commercial variation known as the Monitor) and shotguns extensively. It's well documented that Barrow's long guns of choice were BAR's (stolen National Guard weapons) and cut down Browning semiauto shotguns.

    When killed they had:

    3 BAR's
    1 Browning 20 gauge sawed-off shotgun
    1 Winchester 10 gauge sawed-off shotgun
    1 Colt .32 ACP pistol
1 Colt .380 ACP automatic pistol
    1 Colt 45 cal. revolver
    7 1911's
    3100 rounds of ammunition

A pic showing some of their car's contents:

A closer view of some of these guns:

BTW - Keep in mind they didn't actually have any sort of crimes planned for that day. This was how they went routinely equipped. [:0]

Arcadia Louisiana is where the final gun battle went down. I worked a case over there years ago and they still thought they were living in that time...

Different part of Louisiana... The walls were covered with news footage from that day.

German Panzers didn't "like" BARs either. [:D]
