Bronze Stars - Father In Law Received Three

Lou Kanzleiter passed away on the 17th. Enlisted at 21 years old.
Served in the Pacific theater.
NEVER told anyone, even his wife. Hardly ever watched, or even finished a war movie.
Wouldn't see, "Saving Private Ryan".
Found his discharge papers listing his ribbons, and metals, but nothing absolutely nothing else. Not even a photograph.

What actions were required to receive a Bronze Star?
How unusual is it to receive three?
How can we find out more about him?

In his memory, THANK YOU who served. GOD bless you, and your families.

Happy Bullet Holes!

I dont know the exact answer to your question, but I think I would start by calling the Pentagon, asking for military records division, with the deceased's social security number and branch of service info. handy. The discharge papers should have most everything you need. Now whether or not they will tell you this over the phone is a totally diff. story, but they should at least tell you how to go about getting the info. through the proper channels. There is most likely a web site that will tell you the info. also. A search should narrow your question down pretty quickly.

Try going to www.homeofheroes.com/medals/pages_wh/10_bronzestar.html This will answer your first question. As far as the second question, there is a provision for wearing a Silver Oak Leaf in lieu of 5 Bronze. How often this happened I have no idea.

Bronze Stars can either be awarded for Valor or Meritorious Service. If awarded for Valor the letter "V" will be attached to the ribbon.

Being awarded more than once you will attach clusters.

Good luck with your record search. You "MIGHT" run into the same problem we did while trying to get copies of my Grand-dad's service record. Seems a lot of the records burned in a warehouse fire in, I believe, St. Louis, where a big percentage of them were stored. Where possible, records were reconstructed as best as they could be, but still lots of gaps. My grand-dad earned the Bronze Star on Tinian (as a cook, nonetheless!) for shooting down a Japanese Betty bomber on a low-level nuisance attack on the airfield. My great-granddad earned the "Wound Badge" for being machine-gunned in France in WW1. I have the type-written notice from his commanding officer stating that he had been shot and, thus, had the right to the badge. But I sure would like to have the badge! Again, good luck in your search, and sincerly sorry about your loss.
