Alright, I'm wanting ot go turkey hunting this year, and I was wondering which gun yall would recommend I take. I have 2 choices that I've already narrowed it down to. The first is a Remington 1100 12 gauge with a modified choke barrel that is 28" (i think. Its close to that). The other is a Maverick 88 12 guage, with a 18" barrel. The Maverick is my beater gun that I'm not scared to get messed up. The Remington takes 2-3/4 in. shells, and the Maverick can take up to 3 in. shells. Also, what shells would yall recommend?

I'm looking to purchase a new .22LR for the upcoming turkey hunt. Any of ya'll have an opinion on what I should be looking for? I like semi-autos, but I'm inclined to look at an accurate bolt action rifle. I want to stay under about $300, and I don't want a scope. So far, I'm thinking about CZ or Remington.Thanks,G36

I have watched two video's and am now an expert. If you have any questions just fire away [:D]

It does look like a lot of fun. actually calling the birds up to you would have to be rewarding. Probably lots of hard lessons to be learned first.

Well, unfortunately, my application for this spring's turkey hunt was denied. The system is a lottery, so not everyone can get a license. My dad was denied too, but my brother got his! So, we have two photographers and one hunter.I have a 12Ga. that I'd like to let him use, but it has a short barrel. Anybody know where I can get a replacement barrel for a Savage Arms Springfield Model 67H shotgun? Preferably one with interchangable choke tubes?Thanks,G36

Any reason you do not want to use a shotgun?

Salzo, good question. After reviewing the Michigan Dept of Natural Resources website, it appears I can ONLY hunt using a shotgun. I guess I thought it would be more of a challenge to hunt turkey with a 22.Okay, well, I am still going turkey hunting and the only shotgun I have is for home protection (18.5" barrel). How about some advice on a good turkey SHOTGUN? I still only have about $300 to spend, can I still get a decent firearm? Thanks again,G36

Any fully choked 12 or 10 ga will do, and if you want to get in closer, use a 16. I got a muzzle loader with a nice full choke pattern that I'd even use if needed. The turkey is really hyped up I think, they die hard with a .22 by the way, but I've only heard that, uh huh. Incidentally, the head shot is the no bull crap shot you want, the vitals are practically in its butt, so dont aim at the chest if you use an improper weapon of opportunity, should you see one during turkey season when you're squirrel hunting.

Aww c,mon!!!!!!! Get the Mossberg 835! 28" bbl with extra full choke. 3.5" #4 or #6. Don't get the semi 3.5", they will not run target loads. Get the pump. When everybody asks you why you need that, just show 'em what you can do past the 35-50 yards they shoot. Make sure to put a quality shotgun scope on it.

I have hunted turkey for several years with a Savage model 24 with a 22 rifle over a 12 guage full choke. And yes, I have popped most of my turkey's with the 22. Spring turkey season here coincides with spring squirrel season. If the turkey's aren't out, can always count on bagging a few bushy tails for the fying pan.

bhayes420--Do you like that Savage? I've considered one myself. How accurate is the .22 barrel? As far as an economical turkey gun goes, you can't go wrong with a Mossberg 835 Ulti-mag for less than $300.

robsguns, you crack me up. Okay, I'll check out all the suggestions. I remember a thread I started some time ago when Beach mentioned a shotgun over a 22. I think I'll re-read that post too. Thanks!

I think most states are the same But not sure ..spring gobbler would be shotgun or bow only and in fall would be any firearm. That is az and pa as I remember it.I personal use a browning bps 10ga. in spring and have taking many turkeys in the fall with a 22 mag. I don't think I would use a 22lr. I also bagged my fall turkey this past season with a 22 hornet, that is deadly on turkeys. Also as stated have used the 835 ulti mag 3.5 too it is a heck of a round.
Remember,"your woman may not find you handsome, But atleast she'll find ya handy". I love that show..............

One key item to watchout for if you dsecide to purchase a 3.5 super mag 12 ga. shotgun, make sure that it cycles all rounds loaded and empty. Like someone said their SM will not cycle field loads very well, Mine on the other hand will not cylce 3.5" while in the pumping, reloading, mode in cold weather. I bought the remington 870 came turkey mag. Works great in all weather except the cold drizzly type of stuff that the ducks loveto fly in. So in turn i bought a side by side 10 ga. Works great, so far. Now I just use the remington for squirrels and turkey hunting.songdog

Remington makes several good turkey guns, look at their 870 12ga 3inch comes with 21 barrel with a rem super full choke tube, stock and forearm are in camo and metal is a black finish, I tried their 12 ga super mag which is a 3 1/2 inch found it cost more, did not shoot any better, and was a lot heavier to carry. make sure you know your state game laws here in Wi hunting is only with a shotgun, for both spring and fall seasons, using a rifle will get you a good fine and since turkeys have to go to a registration station and be tagged , it would be hard to explain a large bullet hole in the bird

Idsman75, I have had my Savage for nearly 25 years and love it. The 22 is as accurute as I am! LOL! Nice short, light, easy handling little gun. Don't buy a new one though. They look like crap with the synthetic stock. You can find used ones at auction fairly regularly. Good luck!
