Classic and I were at a flea market this morning and got yanked into a discussion a man was having with his wife... It was at a table where a gentleman was selling guns... He had a rather nice selection...no we didnt buy any.. *LOL... but this couple were there and she wanted to buy a gun... Let me try and remember it from the start..

The husband asked out opinion when we stopped to examine the guns... The discussion was rather heated between the husband and wife... she wanted to sell her 45 and get a gun she could handle... She went on to explain that she couldnt cock the 45..(her words)... She has arthritis in both hands and cant pull the slide back...She did say it was a Colt 1911 model...and from experience, it would be a tad hard for her to do... Her husband said very firmly, that she was keeping the .45 and that was the end of the discussion... She went on to say what good was the gun to her if she couldnt even cock it.. that is where we were asked... Both of us agreed that she needed something she was able to use as she is alone most of the time... Classic went on to describe some alternatives for her other than the .45 as did the dealer... but her husband stated that under no circumstances was she getting anything else.. she had the .45 and that was it..By this time the wife was almost in tears, but her husband would not give in to a simple request..one that might cost him his wife's life one day..He walked away muttering something about stupid women...
I asked Classic why some men feel they must make the decision they feel is best for their wives...and his reply was.. "Cause they are jack*****"
My question is.. what would you have done?..Do you feel she is right in asking for something she can use given the arthritis in her hands?..

He should give in to her request. He seem unconsiderate about her feelings. Maybe they should have talked before coming to the gun show about gun she wanted.

I would have taken the .45 and got her whatever she wanted. As long as it was of a major caliber so she wouldnt be under-powered.But if she didnt like it I definately wouldnt force her to keep it.

Its not that she didnt like it, Eric.. she cant use it... she cannot pull the slide back... She told me she has to put the gun between her knees and use both hands to move the slide... notice I said move...
so what good is it to her?... Classic and I were asked our opinion and we gave it... told him to sell the .45 and get her something she could use...and be safe.. but he refused.. very firmly refused I might add... He stated he had bought the .45 for her, and she was not getting another one...

He was being a Jack*** IMHO. He needs to watch out or she might turn him in to a Willie Nelson look a like. (sewn up in the sheets while he sleeps and she takes a ball bat to him) Agreed, they should have discussed it before they went to the show. They also should have discussed it before she given the .45. Actually, I think a 1911 type might be too much for most woemen. (Don't flame me, I said most, and realize that there are quite a few who can handle it.) Of course, this is my two cents worth and in my muble opinion.

He sounds like a first class a-hole.If she cant use it she doesnt need it.She needs to get rid of it when he isnt around. But from the degree of * he seems to be he might be worried if he gets her one that she can function and shoot it might be pay-back time, she's liabe to make im pay.And I just kind of figured if she couldnt use it she wouldnt like it.He maybe was thinking he could rack it for her and just leave it loaded and she could just cock the hammer.

I would have put a .32 into her hands and told her to rack it. After she did that with ease, I would have handed her a .45 and told her to do the same, so maybe the man could see just how difficult it is for her. Hopefully, he would have realized just how stupid he was being after everybody could see the difference.
Although, he sounds like somebody that only sees and hears what he wants. If I had been the dealer, I would probably offered her an even trade, so money wouldn't be an issue.
Other than that, just pray that the idiot will see the light...

So this POS might just have gotten his wife killed.
Why is there so many idiots walking around ?
I always hope that a woman can shoot the .45...but she gets what ever she can handle easily.EVEN if its a .22....a .22 beats a poke in the eye with a sharp stick........

My wife started with a 45acp, she also could not pull the slide back on the 45acp I got for her. I love the 45 and thought she could handle it also. I was WRONG, yes, I admit it. So I got her the 357, she now has 3 357mags and a 9mm Ruger. She handles them all just fine.

I don't think I would buy her another semi-auto with out her handleing it first, dont want the same problem as with the 45. But I would but her another wheele gun as a surprise.

As far as the A--hole that would not trade for something his wife could use, I hope he is there when the S.H.T.F.

Sounds like he (the husband)is a big jerk. If she can't use the .45,
what good is it to her? Especially in an emergency situation.
Could be he just doesn't want to get rid of the .45.
He either needs to sell/trade the .45, or buy her a weapon she likes and can, is able, to handle and quit being such a butt about it.
My wife has trouble with double action revolvers, and doesn't really
like semi-autos, but has NO PROBLEM with an 870 Remington.
Classics' response to your question is correct. And, to answer your
question, Yes she is right to ask, AND SHE SHOULD GET IT!!!!!

Maybe he's got a problem turning lose of that particular pistol -- might have saved his neck in the war, etc.

On the other hand he might not understand arthritis yet and can't understand how it hurts.

Either way, he's got a problem or three and needs some help.

I kinda like the sheet idea!

First two questions that pop into my mind is..."How Much LIfe Insurance she has" and Who's the beneficiary"?..Let her keep the .45..the secretly tell her to get what she can handle..if that Jack*** is on the road that much he ain't gonna notice anyway...Man needs to get his priorities in order..God first along with the family...but.."Only the Shadow Knows"

greetings, i don't know their economic stats but it may not be an either or situation. let him keep the bad ol' 45 and get her a 38 spl, or 9mm ruger (the p-95 fits most dainty hands and can be racked w/o much effert). respt submitted dads-freehold

If it's her gun, it's none of his business. If it's his gun that he lets her use, he needs to take it back and let her buy what she needs. My wife has several of my guns in her possession that she refers to as "her" guns. She does, however, know not to sell them, and that I will buy her anything she decides she wants.

Sounds like the husband is the one who wants the gun and cares not, what his wife wants. She should knock his teeth out, then get him false teeth the wrong size that he can't use, and tell him "tough- thats what you got and your not trading them for anything else"!

When ever i get someone in the store lookin for a gun for home defense the first thing i ask is if they are married, if they answer yes then i suggest they bring their wife in with them. Unfortunately some men let their egos get in the way of common sense. I believe that any gun that will be used for home security should be a joint purchase.

My wife has the same problem but her wrist problems was caused by carpal tunnel.I made the mistake of buying her a automatic and she could not rack it back.Simple fix, I bought her a single six.She also has a model 36 smith&wesson. She claims I bought the auto knowing she could not use it,keep telling her I would never do anything like that, wink, wink. My opinion she needs to give her husband an attitude adjustment while he is sleeping.

If the guy had been dumb enough to ask my opinion, I would have told him that it obvious he wanted to keep the gun and it was obvious his wife would make him trade it in on something else. Then I would have told her, if he wants it that bad, get yourself something and don't make him trade it in. If she said, we don't have the money for that, I would have looked at him and watched him shrivel like the man he is, ashamed that he can't afford both guns and dying to keep the .45. I would then have told her, you're going to have to keep it cocked and locked all the time. Just keep the safety on. If you need it, flick the safety off and pull the trigger. If he don't like it, shoot him first. (Bad grammar intentional.)

It's okay to say *, it's a thick headed pack animal. This fella goes beyond that, he is thick headed , narrow minded, and egocentric. If his wife is ready to defend her life with a handgun it should be something she could handle easily in spite of her arthritis. If BB brain wants to keep the .45 in the estate, then he should let his wife get whatever it is she could use. This oaf needs the family elders to give him a good slap to the back of the head. Was he in animals skins and dragging club? Sorry about the late post.

The husband was being an IDIOT! Now she probably won't even try to use the gun for self defense. She has no faith in her ability to use it if and when she might need it. If you look long enough 38 snubs are still around for under $200.00. I've actually seen them for $150.00 . If I were in his shoes and it's strictly a house gun. I'd go find her a brazilian 1917 S&W. Those big moon clips would be easy for her to handle with her arthritus. I saw one that had been bobbed at the last gun show, a buddy picked it up for $110.00. Can't get any cheaper than that for a major caliber handgun.

So he doesn't want her to have something she can use...

Man, that guy just won a gold medal in the heavy weight jerk competition! Insensitive, uncaring, egotistical and STUPID! What good is a firearm if one can't chamber a cartridge? It makes a pretty expensive and awkward hammer (d'ya suppose that's what the gov't bought when they had those $600 hammers?). I don't know for sure what I would have done differently than you & Classic, but I think offeror is on the right track. Maybe offered to trade two guns for one? A decent wheelgun for her and a POS .45 auto for him . . . does Jennings even make a .45? Guy deserves a swift kick in the butt and two 180 degrees away. I agree with Classic's assessment of him; he's the type that makes the feminists' case for single parenthood!

I always like at least one belly laugh a day and this thread has filled the bill for today. Everybody's right on. I like the club-dragging image. Anyway, too bad the dope won't be reading this. A lot of good advice in here. If she's smart as I hope she is, she'll figure a way to get something she can use, whether he knows about it or not. One thing I know for sure is women don't always need or expect a man to fix things for them. This is one of my main points, though, when recommending guns for women. Make sure they get a chance to operate the thing before you saddle them with it, because some women can't even pull a cheap 12 pound trigger, let alone rack the slide on a .45. Don't give 'em a present and be all disappointed if it doesn't work out. When it comes to self defense, hurt feelings are not the a-number-one priority.

I agree with the others here. Name calling and all. My wife "settled" for the SP-101 because she has not found a semi that she is comfortable with yet. But when she finds one, she knows, that I will get it for her.

I havent gotten my wife to carry yet but when I do I do not think I will get her any thing less the a 9mm or larger then a 40 cal. A 45 for a women with had problem would be very hard. I can understand if the guy was sayingI bought you this gun as your first gun and I do not want you to get rid of if and he got her something else. But this guys was just being a a** hole.

    Goes without saying...the guy's a butthead.

I took Mrs. Mudge to a couple of guns shows so she could "try a few on" before we she settled on a carry piece. The Glock 30 works well for her. She had to learn to hold the slide and push the frame rather than hold the frame and pull the slide but it works for her.

A bigger butthead is hard to imagine. However, given that you are not going to change him, there are ways to 'cock' a 1911 for those with bad/weak/arthritic hands. You and/or Classic should have shown her how to rack the slide using the edge of a table, a holster or whatever is handy. If she is stuck with that jerk, she ought to learn enough to make him worry!

It looks like a psicological warfare ,he forces her to have a gun she cannot cock ,maybe is that he does not get either, so gets something as an "extension" of his personality to PUNISH her.....

The guy is a JerK he does not love her ....If I like the .45 I buy it but also buy something she can manaqe in a lower but faster caliber
    .32L,or 9mmL ...or a .22 magnum .

    That is cruel........
