Barrel break in ?

I just bought a used Remington .270 and I was wondering how I should shoot it the first time. I know it normally wouldn't matter since it is used, but it was only shot about 5-10 times and that was about 14 years ago. Should I just shoot it or do I need to do anything special? Thanks.

OK. Let me start off the debate.
    Do nothing special.

OK. Let me handle the other side of the debate.

There are lots of opinions, and they have been debated harshly here, but here is one from Badger Barrels, anyway:

And others say, just shoot the dang thing . . .

I know that this has been debated before, I don't really mean whether you should break it in at all or not. This will probably be a question for those who think you should break it in, I'm just asking since it has been shot about 10 times already before, if it would be useless to try to break it in now. Or, since it was only shot about 10 times, if it would still benefit from trying to break it in. Thanks.

I think it may be too late to gain any benefit at this stage of the game....the copper from the rounds fired has already annealed into the barrel and although a copper solvent will bring it out the imperfections created will still be in the barrel.

Oh and don't worry about the Naysayers...they are not interested in taking their barrels to the accuracy you seek(they instead prefer druid like incantations while sacrificing snakes in the light of a full moon). Having said that please if you really want to break in your new barrel go ahead and pull up one of the ancient threads discussing barrel break in and make your decision. This topic has almost become "persona non grata" here at GB because of the animosity it once created. So whether you are a true believer or a naysayer just go ahead and make your decision. The procedures most people use are relatively similar. Beach

The above post is by a competition shooter. Keep that in mind when making a decision. If you want an average group then just shoot it. If you want something better for your $$$, break em in, RELIGIOUSLY. Go to a benchrest site, and ask the members if they just shoot their barrels when they are new. After all, they measure groups with micrometers.

I personaly would take beachmaster's advice, but hey, I'm just one of those guys who finds anything over 3/4moa unacceptable.

A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.

All I would do is give it a good scrubbing with a high quality non-embedding bore paste such as JB's.

Breaking in a barrel is like praying, ya got everything to gain and nothing to lose.

I was in the 'shot 'em right out of the box' crowd. That's what I believed because when I was shooting serious, that's the way we did it. The barrel makers then would have been insulted if you felt you had to 'improve' on their work.

When that debate started I stated my experience and then listened to the rebuttals. And the more I listened, the more my curiosity was aroused and the more I dug into the modern world of precision shooters. They break them in!

Now, you ain't gonna make a .223 kill squirrels at 1000 yards or coerce a .44 magnum into a 250 yard deer slayer, but you will be doing what the true experts are doing. The rest is up to you.

Speak to it softly as if it were the first time ,remember it has not being used for long so it must be "tight", so treat it nicely so it does not get tense ,clean well ,use brand new bullets ,push that bolt slowly in so the bullet seats confortably in the forcing cone, initiated into the rifling .... aim and squeezzzeeee that trigger
    sofffftlyyyyy click! ....

    KABBOMMMM!!!

Thoose are the erotics of shooting a gun for the first time ....
that barrel is not virgin anymore!!!!!
