Battle over secret machine gun buyer
22 August 2002

BRUSSELS - Green party Agalev has called for arms manufacturer FN Herstal in Li?ge to reveal the identity of the customer who ordered 5,500 machine guns worth millions of euros.

The Minimi automatic gun can fire 800 bullets per minute.

The company and its only shareholder, the Walloon region, have said the order was made by a new client but have refused to make the client's identity public.
They say a contract was signed which makes them financially liable if they breach a customer's privacy.

But according to green party member and European MP Bart Staes, the factory and its owner violate a European code of conduct.

Staes said the code urges exporting EU member states to make the identity public of the country of destination, the identity of the buyer and to describe the exported weapon.

Furthermore, Europe forbids weapons to be exported to conflict areas and countries that do not respect human rights, he said.

"If cowardly and dishonorable men sometimes shoot unarmed men with army pistols or guns, the evil must be prevented by the penitentiary and gallows, and not by a general deprivation of a constitutional privilege." - Arkansas Supreme Court, 1878
