Finally got to shoot my 454

I recall someone saying we should post experiences with new guns, so here is mine.I shot my Ruger Super Redhawk in .454 Casull today. It was nice. It shoots just like the .44 Super Redhawk I have, just lets you know its there. My buddy and I shot it together, I was a little worried about shooting it actually, dunno why, just was. We shot one shot each of .45 Long Colt, no surprises there, easy. Then one shot each of Winchester 250gr Casull, stout but not unlike the .44 Mag. He had been shooting the first round of those two, I told him I better do the honors with the next, since I'd been warned. I shot the 300gr. Hornady Custom, very authoritative to say the least, not like a .44 at all. I held it the way I had been previously, like I do the .44, and was rewarded with an immiediate blood blister in the palm of my supporting hand when the edge of the grip recoiled in it and pinched skin. Wow, mental note to adust grip for that round. Told my buddy to adjust for it so he was safe, but I guess he didnt think it looked much different watching me, than the first 2 rounds. He took his shot and took about 1.5 steps back at the shot, that was funny, he apparently was not leaning into the shot at all. Then he said I bet you dont shoot that one handed huh? I said actually I was going to take one more shot that way and call it a day, so I did. One hand shooting with this gun is not bad, you just wouldnt want to do it more than probably once or twice without a shooting glove, the trigger guard really digs in on your finger. All in all, I like the gun, accuracy was good, but not measured as we were just feeling out the recoil, not shooting groups, I had fun, and am hooked on it, big bangs are cool. I feel confident that whatever I hit with this is going to stop breathing.

Hey Rob what kind of grips do you have and how much did ya pay for your new baby?
Politicians Love Gun Control / China Has Gun ControlDid you buy some brass a reload? I have a 629 and load 23.9 grains of 296 win with a 240 grain hollow point. I was wondering if the difference was drastic from the 44 to the 454.[This message has been edited by COWBOYKIDD (edited 01-20-2002).]

COWBOYKIDD, The grips I have are the original grips for the Super Redhawk, I like the way they look, but I dont think they lend to controlability as much as an after market grip might. The diff. between my .44 which I also load to the max with 19.5 gr. of H4227 with a Hornady 300gr. XTP is pretty obvious. I have used more powder than that, screwing around but it was still not nearly as powerful, in the recoil dept., as the 300gr. Hornady in the .454. Both of my guns have 9.5" bbls. so its a good comparison. I have a scope on my .44, although I havent had it long, and I can tell you the added weight of the scope still doesnt have much to do with my .44 not seeming to be as heavy recoiling as the 454, cause I had my .44 for years before I got the scope, and I know it never recoiled enough to really notice with that heavy of a gun. Yes I have some brass, plenty of it too, I think, from the same fella I got the gun from. The price of the gun was 425.00, I got a really good deal, it is in like new condition. He bought it new in Nov. of last year on this site. If you get a chance to get one of the 454s I would do it. I have heard the Taurus is easier on the hand, but never shot one yet. I like the longer bbls. of the Rugers, cause I dont really like scopes on my handguns, you know the longer barrel is easier to sight with, I'm taking the Leupold off of my .44, if I keep it, dont really need it now that I've got the 454, but we'll see about that.

Rob, I have the Super Redhawk in 44mag as well as the 454 and love them both.I did change the grips to Badgers, with the finger grooves it gives better control, less re-adjusting between shots. Both my guns are 9 1/2" barrel models and are both topped with a Leupold M8 2x scope with Extended ER.

I don't have a .454 yet but I can tell you my taurus .44 is much more pleasant to shoot than a redhawk.

I have the soft rubber Houge's on both of my Super Redhawks, .44 and .454, and the differance is like night and day, they retail for around $20 and are worth every penny. go to http://www.getgrip.com [This message has been edited by sig-man (edited 01-20-2002).]
