I got a little cash and want a super duper new rifle. Thinking about a weatherby or something since I can't find a .338 Lapua in a heavy barrel for a "in my range" type of price. The 50 BMG's are out there also and looks like I only got enough for the ammo on those 2 rifles. Any suggestions?

Will,....you going to hunt, or just target shoot, or both?? For the rifle itself..I, with my limited funds..have owned or own..shoot or have shot a $hi%load of various makes of rifles. For me, one of my favorites is my Browning Medallion with ported Boss. Loud but it has done everything that I have asked..in the hunting department.Serious target shooting I would want a heavy barrel though.I like it better than my wthby, and mdl.7 rem. Just me.I am thinking for the fun of it..(did this 25 yrs. ago with a 7mm mauser action)of locating a nice mauser action in 8mm and building a nice little all around fun gun. Nice action, have the bolt turned down if needed, polished, rebarrled if needed or wanted, nice blueing job, scope, stock & sling it....= if done right a very affordable nice rifle that will hold its own and more, plus...you did it yourself. With all the available stocks out there now vs.25yrs. ago when I did the 7mm, it would be a hoot! Well..I think I have just about talked myself into doin it again..another project..but it is great fun! Thanks for the post...my soon to be wifey is sure to love it!

All very good ideas. I am going to build one of my own but right now I am going to leave that thought until work calms down a bit. What about the Winchester Coyotes?

The Sako TRG-S has a 26" medium barrel in .338 Lapua, were you specifically wanting something heavier than that?

Can you buy factory ammo for Lazzeroni chamberings or must you reload ammo for all their rifles?

Judge Dread, I don't want to discourage someone from buying tools, (or guns) but I think it would require a little more than just a Smitty to build a complete gun. You have all the tooling, plus the measuring devices, and it wouldn't hurt a bit to have some knowledge of how to run them. A person could probably get in way over their head in a hurry trying to buy all the stuff to build a firearm, and you would still have to buy the material and pay for the heat treating (unless your buying a furnace also) I think Will270 would be better off to find a machine shop employee that likes guns, and get him to help build one. That way he would have a little over the shoulder quality control. But if he does buy a smitty, good luck.(and maybe we ought to pitch in and buy him a Machinist Handbook. They are worth the money for a new machinist, or hobbyist. But considering a .50 is out of his price range, then the machinery to build a gun is way out of it.(.50 is cheaper than all the machines)

Smithy has good books... also is common sense to learn all the basic that go into building a gun ,but the tool is useful in many other ways ,is like a gun,you use it right ,learn to use it well, you enjoy it .Use it reclessly and I bet the least you will get will be a burning hole, be it from a exploding gun shrapnel or a rectal ulcer.
