Washington-AP -- A new study on the formation of the universe questions a key component of the Big Bang theory. An analysis of very faint galaxies seen through a telescope suggests there was an eruption of stars bursting to life very early in the 15 (b) billion-year history of the universe. The work of Kenneth Lanzetta -- of the State University of New York at Stony Brook -- challenges the long-held belief that star formation began slowly.Instead of five (b) billion years, his study suggests stars emerged in a-half (b) billion years. His conclusions are based on a deep space analysis involving the Hubble Space Telescope. One NASA expert said verification of the theory would "dramatically change our understanding of the universe."Experts say more study is needed.
