Berkeley narrowly passes anti-war measure BERKELEY, Calif., Oct. 17 (UPI) -- The left-wing bastion of Berkeley, Calif., narrowlyvoted Tuesday night to condemn U.S. military action in Afghanistan and not beforethe addition of an amendment denouncing the terrorist "mass murder" of thousands ofAmericans on Sept. 11. The resolution, which passed on a 5-4 vote, was believed to be the first officialstatement by a U.S. city critical of the U.S. military response to the destructionof the World Trade Center and the damage to the Pentagon. Although public opinion polls show the American public in favor of the militaryresponse by an unprecedented margin, former city council member Ying Lee Kelley urgedthe panel to "continue to honor Berkeley's tradition of opposition to brute forceto solve profoundly difficult social problems." Berkeley, home of the University of California at Berkeley campus, was the birthplaceof the free speech movement in the 1960s with Mario Salvo and has been a hotbed ofpeace protests since the Vietnam War. The San Francisco Chronicle said a recent poll of Berkeley students showed 65 percentwere opposed to the U.S.-led bombing of Afghanistan. While the Chronicle Wednesday described the council's makeup as split between leftistand centrists, there were a number of residents at Tuesday's meeting urging the resolutionbe defeated. "War does solve something," said Kelso Barnett, the head of a conservative studentgroup at the university. "Ask the people of Europe who were liberated after WorldWar II." The council passed the measure, however not before changing the wording to callfor the bombing to end "as quickly as possible" rather than immediately. At an Afghan restaurant in the "Little Kabul" district of nearby Fremont, home tothe largest U.S. population of Afghan people, a couple who appeared to be in their70s and had attended Berkeley, told United Press International that they had organizeda group of 10-20 -- similar to the much larger group of 300 or so anti-war types innearby Palo Alto -- that hold daily protests against the bombings and were gainingsupport from passersby. "We get a lot of car horns honking and only an occasional call of 'traitor,'" saidthe woman, who declined to give her name, noting that the reception was encouraginggiven Fremont's overall conservative attitudes. "Smart bombs are not smart," she said, echoing the sentiment on the sign she holds up for Fremont traffic. stanman: It doesn't matter how many Berkley protesters any aircraft can carry or drop; the whole world would come together in self defence if we did. That degree of air pollution would be an egregious act of terrorism. I personally prefer the enema approach.

I find it laughable that the general liberal public gives so much creedence to the opinions of "students". You always read about students rising in protest over this or that. Students, by definition, are the young skulls full of mush that have lived in an ideal world yet to face the harshness of grim reality. That is why they are freaking students! Holy cow. They are there to learn because they haven't done so yet. Otherwise, they wouldn't be in college!

idsman75,As a college student, albeit at the graduate level, I couldn't agree with you more. Most of my peers are rather naive when it comes to the affairs of the world. I would like to think that I am not so naive, but I guess you folks as the readers of my opinions will have to judge that.

Andrew,It would appear as if you're on the right track, but be careful! My dear deceased father once told me "education is a fine thing son, until it robs a man of his god given common sense!"If you doubt his wisdom, take a long look at any college faculty in the country.

A.Adams etc.Its true about being naive. I get more "curmudgeon-ish" and conservative with each year past graduate school, with each new grim life challenge, and with each new poorly-conceived socialist law that gets signed into being.BTW: good luck with medical school. I know, it was a bear. Doesn't get any easier after either!C

The Savage Nation last night referred to Berkley as the land of STD's and SUV's. Rather poetic don't you think?

Love that Savage! You should hear his spiel about loony leftists and closet commies. He can be found at thepaulreveresociety.com. He has a good choice in names, too.

I am out visiting family in CA right now, the SF area. Believe me, they all think berzerkley is full of a bunch of nuts.Local businesses are pulling out of berkley in protest. Not all California residents, nor ex-californians like myself, are a bunch of ultra-radical socialists! Thank The Lord!Of course, when your governor routinely signs laws AGAINST voters majority opinion, the rest of the country only sees CA as a bunch of dingbats.Well, my family noticed Gray Davis' disregard for his constituency, and regard him as one of the worst- if not the worst governor ever. He's got no chance of winning next term.So all of CA is not lost.FYI

Pete Wilson! Now that was a Governor. Prop 187 killed him.

Thanks Doc C,I've just been through the singularly worst week of my academic career. Pathology mid-term on Wednesday and Microbiology Midterm and Immunology final Friday. I'm doing well so far, and am looking forward to the next couple of exam free months. My very limited clincial time has already showed me that you guys WORK, it doesn't matter though, I'd still be where I am if Doc's made five bucks a year and had pot shots taken at them everyday. When you strip away all of the annoying crap that is associated with the profession today, it is still one of the most noble things that one human being can do for another. I have never been able to even imagine myself doing anything else.

The bad thing about this "protesters"is theyprotest but do no "tesis" on practical solutions nor educate the public towardplausible alternatives other than idioticlameness and innactivity.
I judge Thee!, Not for what you are , but for what you say !
