'Ban live-bullet airguns used by criminals' An airgun which can be illegally adapted to fire live bullets now accounts for at least 50% of guns recovered at crime scenes, it has been claimed.Alan Shiers, an officer with the National Criminal Intelligence Service, told the BBC that "in excess of 50% of recovered weapons" were found to be this type of adapted airgun. The pistols are imported and distributed by Birmingham-based company Brocock which makes the air cartridge system which powers the air gun pellets in normal use.In a statement, the firm said: "Both the police and a Home Office ballistics expert confirm that we're already doing everything possible to prevent the illegal conversion of these products which are sold through a network of registered dealers."The Association of Chief Police Officers called for the Brocock air cartridge pistol to be banned from sale in the UK such is the risk to the public from these weapons.Mr Shiers, who has been collating information from police forces across the country, said: "I would say in excess of 50% of recovered weapons - especially in London - are this type of weapon, the Brocock."He described that figure as a "conservative estimate" and said the situation was a "major problem".NCIS told the programme: "It's a major problem for the UK at the moment. We're having reports of this type of weapon being recovered not just in London where the problem started - but it's now spread to Manchester, Nottingham, Bristol all over the country."In normal use of the airgun, small pellets are fired by a compressed air charge contained in each cartridge which is loaded into the pistol. But criminal gangs have been adapting the guns by fitting special steel sleeves inside the chamber of the gun, enabling live .22 calibre bullets to be fired.Story filed: 03:52 Thursday 24th January 2002 http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_502918.html

When they ban those, will they also ban machine tools, the military's arms and build a dome over the island to keep out smugglers? Where there is a will, there is a way, especially for those determined to break the law. This is such BS.
