You know, it's funny. I remember very vividly the Oliver North hearings, but did not recall the name of Osama bin Laden as the terrorist that North was threatened by. Has this slimeball been around that long?It's pretty evident, in hindsight that we should have listened to OLLIE! I was at a UNC lecture the other day where they played a video of Oliver North during the Iran-Contra deals during the Reagan administration. I was naive back then but was surprised by this particular clip. There was Ollie in front of God and Country getting the third degree. But what he said stunned me. He was being drilled by some senator I didn't recognize who asked him, "Did you not recently spend close to $60,000 for a home security system?"Oliver replied, "Yes I did sir." The senator continued, trying to get a laugh out of the audience, "Isn't this just a little excessive?""No sir," continued Oliver."No. And why not?""Because the life of my family and I were threatened.""Threatened? By whom.""By a terrorist, sir.""Terrorist? What terrorist could possibly scare you that much?""His name is Osama bin Laden."At this point the senator tried to repeat the name, but couldn't pronounce it, whichmost people back then probably couldn't. A couple of people laughed at the attempt. Then the senator continued, "Why are you so afraid of this man?""Because sir, he is the most evil person alive that I know of.""And what do you recommend we do about him?""If it were me I would recommend an assassinteam be formed to eliminate him and his men from the face of the earth."The senator disagreed with this approach and that was all they showed of the clip. It's scary when you think 15 years ago the government was aware of Osama bin Laden and his potential threat to the security of the world. I guess like all great tyrants they start small but if left untended spread like the virus they truly are.

    Right David. They are like a cancer, get it early enough and you can eliminate it fairly easy. Let it grow and grow and you wind up with it out of control.

    Yeah, I have a copy of this tape.I didn't think it had been that long ao, but if you look at Bin Laden's beard it looks 15 years later.I really enjoyed Ollie's testimony before the senate, there is a oneliner that I still remenber, when he was asked what he was doing, after someone had acused him of destroying sensitive papers, his answer was;"They (the investigators, from the senate) were doing their thing, and I was doing mine"He really made those senators look like fools.In retrospect, he was right.

    I remember Ollie well. He ran for a political seat(don't remember which) in my state about 3 or 4 years ago, also. The man got screwed over. Very smart man, I feel myself that he would have made a good politician. I voted for him.

    20/20 did a story about it. they showed the clip on the hearing. north did not mention bin laden, he said it was a palestinian man,(i forget the name, they all sound alike) this man at the time was closely connected with arafat.

    Ollie ran as a Republican for the Senate against Chuck Robb (D)in my home state of Virginia. Would probably have won it if it hadn't been for that scum bag John Warner. Warner wouldn't support his fellow Republican and endorsed Robb. Robb (Who was a couple of years behind me at Mt. Vernon H.S. in Fairfax Co., VA) retained the seat. Mudge the historianps. The post by Nunn says it was copied. I'll assume from that disclaimer that it wasn't Nunn who made these statements. Besides, Nunn is in Texas.
