Too many short magnums?

It seems that everyone is jumping on the short magnum bandwagon. Remington and Winchester are knocking each other out with nearly identical rounds, sort of like the .243 Win. and 244 Rem. debate of the 1950s. I pity the gun dealer who must stock all this stuff. Wouldn't it be nice if the gun companies would develop cartridges by joint venture? Suppose you put your money on the Winchester round which then falls on its face. Then you must rechamber or re-barrel for the Remington Round as the ammo supply would dry up quickly. Having two nearly identical versions of the essentially the same cartridge cuts the profit margins of both companies, confounds the gun dealers and sometimes causes us guys to sit on the sidelines for fear of investing in a cartridge that's going no where.

I like to see them bring out more choices, I think we could see even more in the next year or two. As far as ammo goes, I think if the ammo becomes in short supply I will probably just reload anyway.

It is a capitalist system...those cartridges that get all the flavor of the month billing dont always become successes...(see .260 Rem). There are always deserving wildcats that are on the edge of factory recognition...(.338-06). And then there are the overblown factory initiated short magnum craze.... See 300 WSM and 300RUM. Just the initials and other verbiage put me off. The fact of the matter is that they are still heavy recoil magnums that the one day a year hunter will have to have and still cant handle effectively. Soooo.....in a year or two, those guys in the market for a used rifle will fare pretty well. They do have some interesting wildcatting capabilities however. So buy the magazines and buy the new flavor of the month. Learn to handload and dont worry. The game doesnt know whether it is shot with a .300 Ultra super RemWin Mag or a surplus .303 Brit.

Swede, don't think I'd consider a .300 RUM a "short magnum", per se.

I like the idea because, as I explain to my wife, I must sample some of these calibers.

OK OK OK...I got anagramized and abbrevitedized to death....What I should have said was .300 RSUM instead of .300RUM. My point is still the same...
