firing indoors

when the weather is bad & i have that urge to fire a few rounds, ive been known to shoot 10-25 45acp fmj's into a safe backstop in the basement. this is done very occasionally ( once a month ? ) as i realize air quality is poor. others i have talked to do the same thing while others say that we are doomed to cancer. i dont think its any worse than those that smoke or sit in smokey bars day after day...thoughts?...yes, eye & ears are protected & the backstop is sure.

yes you will die of cancerif you live long enough.fmj with soft back stop souldn't put lead in the air .I don't know what nitroceulose turns to when burnt.

When I was about 17, I had a little Beretta Jetfire .22 Short automatic pistol. I found that it would not propel a bullet all the way through a 2" pine board.Soooo....I took a 2" by 6" board and stapled some targets to it and leaned it against the wall in my room. Then I would shoot at the targets from the other side of the room.I did this when my parents were away, and I never told them about it. I figured they would freak out over shooting in the house.

Don't forget to open a gas pipe wile doing it,so you die faster and suffer less.... Be sure to insure you and your house and that your wife and kids are away ....its the only good thing you can do with that UNSAFE practice. If killing yourself, do it fast and with style.

When it was too bloody cold to shoot outside with my brother's .45 (and who wants to dig casings out of the snow), I used to just set up a good, stout log at the edge of the woodshed door and stand back along the corridor leading to the back room. Good 15 feet at least, eyes and ears natch, isn't like .45 bullets are gonna go through a log. What else are ya gonna do when the "itch" comes on ya in the middle of winter? Never told him about that, he probably wouldn't have appreciated it, bein' as it was his house and all...

When I get the urge to target practice and its raining (It doesn't get cold enough here to not go outside), I get out either the pellet rifle, wrist rocket, or throwing knives. I made a trap for the pellet rifle and wrist rocket. For the knives I tacked three old dart boards together. This curbs the urge for me.

If you are shooting small numbers of rounds very infrequently it seems a nonissue to me.

Lead poison has no cure that I am aware of. We had people working around a lead (molten) tank, and also around a molten zinc tank. As standard procedure anyone working around the tanks would be tested monthly for pb concentrations in their blood. Only a few ever managed to stay around the tanks enough to elevate the pb levels to a harmful (?) amount. But they were around it way more than your small exposure. However, still nothing to play with. Figure out some way to put an exhaust fan in the room to exchange the air for fresh air. Put the exhaust (a good fan in the window?)downrange of you, and happy shooting.

lead concentrations will work out of your blood system only with time. Mother Nature and time are the only cure. Lead ingested or inhaled does have brain developement effects on younger children, as is witnessed by D.Nunn and his exposure as a child. If your going to shoot, ventilate the room , especially if your shooting at your kids.(or with your Kids) Merry Christmas to all.

A shooting trick I learned years ago using my S&W .38 was to prime the shells, then load them with parafine wax by pushing the case on a block of the stuff. At 20' in my garage it made a nice target load, although somewhat messy.

Awww! Mmmm.... For the sake of diplomacy and education....Lead = POISON Pb206 (Gulf sindrome) + nitroamines = slow death and EVIDENT brain damage ...let Nunn explain it to you better ... some one pass on the wipes please....

As a single young man, I had rented a small house. It was OK for just me, but it also had a mouse in it. Sometimes, when I was watching TV in the living room, I would catch a movement out of the corner of my eye, and then look into the kitchen and there would be the mouse. At the time, I had a Colt New Frontier .22 revolver. I took to leaving it on the coffee table loaded with shot cartridges. One night, a young lady was over helping me watch TV, and I caught a furtive movement off to my left. It was the mouse. I snatched up the Colt and let one round fly. Mouse got into high gear and disappeared. It did not occur to me that I was badly over-extending the effective range of the shot cartridge. Oh, yes, I never did make any progress with the young lady. She left thinking I was a bit eccentric. I never did kill the mouse either.A few years later, as a fledling police officer, I found a neat little item in a cop shop. Plastic bullet, plastic case, powered only by a primer. Reloadable, reusable. Just the ticket, I thought, for shooting practice indoors. I was married for the first time by then, and was careful to try out my discovery when the wife was gone.I loaded up a bunch of them, then loaded my trusty Smith & Wesson Model 66 with the supposedly safe cartridges.I took a plastic waste basket and taped a target over the open top. I laid the waste basket on its side, figuring it would neatly catch the plastic bullets for re-use.Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! I went to retrieve my bullets. There were none, only six neat round holes in the bottom of the waste basket. Now to find the bullets. Oops. There were now six neat round holes in the side of wife's footstool. It did not ruin it, but did disfigure it some. Wife was less than pleased. That was the last time I shot a firearm in the house.

When carrying revolvers back in the mid-70's we used to make our own low power indoor SWAT training rounds from paraffin. We melted about a 3/8 in. thick cake of wax in a flat pan and then pushed the mouth of a primed .38 Spl. case into the wax like a die cutter. We found that we had to drill out the primer pockets until only a small ledge kept the primer from sliding into the case. If this wasn't done the primers would back out, due to a lack of case recoil, and lock up the cylinder. When wearing eye protection and an old Second Chance -Y vest these were like home grown Simunition rounds, long before there was such a thing. It was also cheap entertainment to sit around the barracks room consuming beverages with your buddies and plink at a cardboard box full of old newspapers.

Nunn, it was just as well that young lady took off that night. If she didn't understand a little thing like snatching up a loaded gun to kill a mouse in the kitchen, she obviously wasn't for you anyway.

I agree with 250 Nunn. When I was dating, I always used the same first date plan: First, a trip to GunFun's indoor range to burn a few boxes of 9mm and then dinner at a place called Sonny's BBQ. If she didn't want to go to GunFun - no dinner, date was over. At dinner, if she tried too hard to stay clean while eating her BBQ chicken, no second date.My wife talked me into renting an MP5 on our first date and then PAID for dinner at Sonny's (where SHE showed ME how to eat BBQ). I never looked back.
