Some people just hate guns

I am really curious as to why some people "just hate guns".My ma-in-law came to visit the other day. She hates guns. She refused to sleep in the same room that has a gun. She doesn't know anyone that has been hurt by one, she never fired one... Heck, she never even held one! Even more confusing since her husband is a retired officer. The missus is ok with them. She's a better shot than me even! I can't figure out why some people can hate something they know nothing about. Hmm...

Many people hate and fear the unknown. Statements made by anti gun organizations frequently show their ignorance of guns. Your mother in law only needs to be educated. Perhaps your wife could do this.

My stepdaughter hates guns. She pays hundreds of dollars for her family to stay at a motel rather than our house during the holidays because there are guns in the house. She makes her husband keep his two guns (family heirlooms) at a friends house. When given her greatgrandfather's 03 Springfield rifle as part of an inheritance she turned it in to the police - a relative was able to get it back. I asked her why she has such a strong conviction against the (legal) ownership and use of firearms and this was her reply: Guns are evil and the people who use them just want to kill and destroy things, only the army and the police should have firearms, and I do not want my son exposed to firearms then later take a gun to school and kill people. This lady has a masters degree, is very successful in operating her own business, is intellegent and relatively open minded but has a closed one sided mind when it comes to guns and politics. She thinks Klinton was the greatest president ever and is a devoted democrat and vegetarian. You can't change someone's opinion or engage them in a friendly intellegent debate if they have a closed mind. Someday when she calls 911 and the police do not show up in time to save her, she may wish her husband's guns were in the house and have a change of heart.

A Vegetarian, huh? All of those I ever knew had a hell of a time getting to the "Meat" of things......this one's no different! Sometimes you just have to accept it as it is...close minded as that may be!

This sounds like the logic impressed upon the chronic alcoholic newcomer in AA:"Want to know how to stop getting drunk? If you never take the first sip, you can't possibly get drunk."Of course, in her son's case, there is no guarantee that curiosity won't lead him to an interest in guns on his own when he's older. I'm all for people who know nothing about guns staying the heck away from them. Keeps people like me safer from accidents. Too bad it affects their politics though, because I don't like the ignorant imposing their will on me. The best definition of ignorance I've heard is "contempt prior to investigation."

Wow GUNPAQ, that really puts things in perspective. Glad to hear you got th Springfield back. I think it all just boils down to how much you trust your fellow man. If you believe that everyone else is always looking out for YOUR best interest, then I AGREE, GUNS ARE EVIL.But if you live in the real world, you know that no one can watch your back but you. Everybody, from the individual to the agency, has the potential toward corruption. An armed public keeps 'em honest.PS...Perfect utopia or not, I know guns are not evil. I love my guns, and will never part with them, no matter what. [This message has been edited by niklasal (edited 02-21-2002).]
