Re-reading your old American Rifleman mags

I picked up the April 2000 issue of American Rifleman and realized I ought to do this more often. I've been asking lately about the recent run of "Jungle Carbines," for one thing, and on page 18 of the April 2000 issue found a very nice explanation of the whole phenomenon, including the Gibbs.

Then on page 50, a discussion of Springfield's Scout model of the M1A. I was saying recently that I like the Scout concept but on a semi-auto comparable in stability to the bolt action Mauser. Well, here's my wish granted. An 18" barrelled M1A Scout...

Add to that the article on new guns for 2000, which mentions the introduction of the Kimber CDP and the Taurus Millennium PT145, plus a review of the "new" economical Baikal over-under, and I wonder why I don't revisit these more often to see what I overlooked....

I agree. I read some of the real old ones; and there is a lot of good data in them also.I've got some back from the 50's.

My collection goes all the way back to 1927 with lots of missing issues in between. I love to go back and find all the old Elmer Keith articles. I've often considered picking out one of those early issues and trying to find and buy one of everything advertised in it. It would make one really cool collection. Maybe turn my gun room into a little replica of a 1927 gun shop.

Well it's not the H&H gunroom in NYC. A few years ago I bought myself a 100 year old house in the small town I grew up in. The former owner was a big fan of the tv show "This Old House" unfortunately he only managed to see the episodes where the old house was taken apart, he missed the ones where they put it back together! The gun room is whichever of the 4 bedrooms not under reconstruction at the present time. Wait till I sell this place and build the next one, Then there will be a Den/Gunroom! It's already on the drawing boards.
