About 4 years ago I was in a Pawn shop in Morristown, TN and the dude had some old ammo boxes with a hodge podge of different types of ammo.I rifled through it and found 3 boxes of 30-40 winchester 165gr. S.P. rifle cartridges. They have a picture of John Wayne on them with the name and "autograph". I was just wondering if it was worth anything and what year they were made. I paid 5 bucks a box for em.

They at least worth the price of a regular box. I have a box of Legedary Lawman and was offered $5.00 but a regular box goes for $15.00. You could go to doublegun and offer it to some one who has a John Wayne.

You got a good deal. I have recently purchased 3 boxes of this ammo bidding on this site and have paid up to $60.00 per box. Got the John Wayne gun when they came out in the early 80's and they only made that ammo for that gun. I now have 6 boxes of the stuff and have yet to shoot the gun. If I ever find out I have some terminal disease I will end up taking the big dirt nap minus a few boxes. That goes for several single action Colts I have as well.

Rogue, they were worth at least $15 each just for the ammo. Depending on the condition of the box, they could go considerably higher, but with all due apologies to the shark, $60 is really above the top end of the present market.Update - loan, glancing through listings on all the sites I monitor, I noted several boxes available for under $40 each. If you decide to get more, you should be able to find it for about $35/bx, possibly somewhat less if you work at it; it's really pretty common.[This message has been edited by Iconoclast (edited 03-05-2002).]

Last gun show I sold two boxes one had 4 rounds fired from it but still had the fired brass. 1 box was in excellent shape the other had a couple dings in it from being handled. Got $55.00 for both of them. Only paid $13.50 a box when they were new, not a bad return on my investment.WOODS
