Coming soon to NY,licensing and registering of nailguns by all contractors.
Man jailed; used nail gun to threaten son Tuesday, February 26, 2002Associated Press HARTFORD - A New York man was sentenced to 41 months in prison Monday for threatening his 4-year-old son with a nail gun while stalking his estranged wife in Madison in September 2000.Marian Watras, 44, of Brewster, N.Y., was convicted by a jury in June on charges of interstate stalking, interstate travel in violation of a protective order and unlawful possession of a nail gun firearm. In U.S. District Court in Hartford, Judge Robert N. Chatigny also ordered Watras to have no contact in person or by telephone with his wife and son during his prison sentence and the subsequent three years of supervised released.Federal prosecutors said Watras went to a home in Madison where his wife and son were staying on the night of Sept. 8, 2000, and hid with the nail gun in the back of the family's van in the driveway. When the woman and child came out of the house the next morning, Watras grabbed his son, pushed the nail gun against the boy's chest without firing, then fought with his wife, prosecutors said. http://www.rep-am.com/statenews/njn.htm

Not all nail guns require compressors. The ones used to drive fasteners and anchors into masonry are powder activated. That is they use a .22 blank to drive a projectile. It wouldn't suprise me in the least if they are already classified as firearms here in NY.WOODS

The scene in the Leathal weapon movie when Danny Glover shoots the bad guy with a nail gun. "Nailed him"The powder charges for these guns come in different strengths for more penetration. I had a neighbor that showed me what it would nail by shooting a nail into 1/4 " metal. It impressed me.

Not only are they powered by 22 blanks but also by small gas cartridges and battery. looks like all us contractors will have to get CCW permits to do our jobs soon.

I saw an x-ray of the skull of a man who took about a dozen nails to the head from a nail gun. The amazing thing is that the guy lived. It was an accident. Yeah, right.

The nail gun in question would have to be of the gas variety. My company uses Hilty brand concrete fastener guns and I dont believe you could get one to fire unless pushed againsed something hard. Now a gas operated wood nail gun could, and I've seen it shot by accident, into say a leg or a arm without alot of effort! Kids dont try this at home! No not me, a wharehouse worker just swinging his arms while getting up bumped his leg and bang! Looked like it hurt also. He recovered with an unusually high iron count.

Please keep me informed of this. I own one, that shoots five inch nails, from a belt. Easily converted to full auto, I am sure, and the safety that requires it to be against something is easily overridden. Haven't checked the ballistic's of it at any given distance, but I don't think it matters to the lawmakers.Have nail gun, will travel

Having done extensive DIY on two homes w/ a variety of tools, I concur that nail guns could, with faulty / altered safety devices, deliver a projectile to a victim. But in NY, I'm not surprised they consider them weapons. Before they are done, one will have to show a license to buy steak because of the potentially lethal use of a knife w/ a decent edge. In a perfect world, Darwin would be allowed to work a few generations and we'd be rid of the liberals.

Some places they already require permits to own--especially the 22 cartridge fired ones. They are not toys, a person could be seriously injured or killed with one if used intentionally to inflict harm--but such is the case with regular old hammers too! (Maybe they'll be licensed next?)

Yea I've seen an ill tempered carpenter going after a smart-* coledge grad one day, I believe the weopon of choice was a estwing 24 oz hammer. Waffle headed of course, Not sure if he ever cought the kid. Never seen the kid again, heard he had his check mailed to him. Knowing the assailant quite well I would prefer the nail gun any day!

Yeah - put a 3" nail through the web between thumb and finger when building my wife's greenhouse. They can be messy when using the push fire method, and not being carefull. Of course it hurt more when I * it out than going in. Looks kinda weird walkin around with a nail in your hand wonderin how your gonna get it out.

I got one of the concrete ones that use the .22 blanks. It will drive a nail into steel plate 1/4 in thick. You have to hit it with a hammer to fire it. All the nail and staple guns at work have been converted to full auto for shooting at pigeons. Knew a contractor who was building a house next to a large praire dog town. he used several extra cases of nails because the help was always shooting at praire dogs. hee hee
