Gun powder help++make smoke---

My sons freind just called and told me his boy scout troup needs a little black powder for a cerimony they are having. They are to use a rocket engine ignitor in a flash pot they have to set it off (good idea). Problem is- I don't have anymore black powder and don't want to buy a # of it just to use once. I thought of using smokeless powder. Now, my question is- What can I do to make smokeless powder smoke alot? Also what could I add to make it burn "red" that wouldn't be toxic? Don't worry- I know these folks and the burn will be controled.
