I think each state has a legal limit on how long of a bladed weapon you can carry on your person. Usually, the limit is 4-6 inches. That kind of rules out a sword, Duncan.

In Texas, it is Unlawfully Carrying a Weapon to carry on or about your person, or in a vehicle, a handgun, illegal knife, or club.Having a CHL and carrying a handgun makes this statute inapplicable. An illegal knife is described as a dirk, dagger, sword, spear, Bowie knife, or any knife with a blade over 5 1/2 inches. Why? Because the legislature, way back in 1880-something said so.I would suggest that you come up with a cut-out of wood that looks like a sword, unless you are REAL SURE of the neighborhood and certain that no one will call the local police.

Define "Blade"...What about a Sword with Smoothed or Blocked Edges?Could a Cane be classified as a Blade, if it has a Sharp Edge?

I have been a member of the SCA Kingdom of Caid for some time now and I have worn swords at events as long as it has been peace tied, the reason that I ask is because this will be out in public.

You could go down to the 5 & dime and pick up a plastic sword for under 5 bucks. That way you won't end up in jail for scaring the hell out of the trick or treeters and their parents.

Swords? I thought it was 2001. I have a sword because the USMC in their infinite wisdom made me buy one. Never did use it except for silly ceremonies, and never intend to use it. Got a .45 will do much better.

What about the laws for Maryland? I will be going to a party this saturday night at a friends house, and I intend to have a sword as part of the costume. Is this ok, considering that we will not be out of the house?

Any body ever hear of a commedien named Stan Freeburg? he did a hilarious satire on Dragnet, called "Dragon Net". the police officer who arrested the dragon for devouring maidens out of season carried a 45 caliber sword. I don't know if it was single edged or double.
keep lots of extra uppers for your ar..you can change often enough to keep the thing from over heating...what ever caliber fits the moment..~Secret Select Society of Suave Stylish Smoking Jackets~

I've looked Kalifornia Penal Code Section 12020 (a)up and down and can't find anything regarding a sword being carried openly. A cane sword is definetely out and is a felony. Any double edged knives (sword included) are felonies to possess if the blade is over 2". You'd better go down to your local police or county sheriff's office and ask if their is a city/county ordinance against it, have them show you the actual code if there is one. The problem with Kalifornia is even as a cop you can't keep up with the legislation.

Thanks for your help. I was able to find the info on the Cane sword but I was not able to find the information on the sword, They talk about daggers and Dirks but a sword is completly different. Also what if it were a saber and not a double edged blade?
