the wife and i just returned from stugis . we logged 3725 miles round trip . we road our 95 hd ultra and had a fantastic time . we saw a lot of weather , everything except snow and tornados . we are from western new york and this was our first trip west of the mississippi .
i never could of imagined the bueaty of that area . we were impressed .the trip took us twelve days to complete traveling around 500 miles a day ( 3 days to get there and 3 back ).we rode 700 miles in s.dakota and wyoming siteseeing .the bison in custer state park are awesome . we also saw deer ,antilope, wild burrow, coyote, and a billion prarie dogs .anybody living in that area i would consider lucky . did anybody else on this forum attend ? i'd like to hear your thoughts . wrench.

i forgot to mention , we stopped in to see the cabella's store in mitchell , s.dakota . this was our first visit to cabellas as we dont have any in our area . it was worse than getting there catolog . they have everything a guy like me will ever need . lots of guns and goodies . we really liked the wildlife displays also . if you never been to a cabellas i would recommend stopping in .

hdwrench glad you liked SD. We generally do not encourage out of staters to move in. It is too crowded the way it is.

cowdoc- Have you got permission to hunt on your neighbro Ted Turners land

Glad you had a good time. That's one heck of a ride from the coast. I'm in the Indy area and have missed only 4 rallys since '82. I used to camp in RMNP outside of Estes Park, CO, stop off in Cheyenne then head to the rally. After a few years I met and became friends with local people and stayed with them. The weather is very unpredictable. Sometimes it's hotted than all get out, other times I can't get enough sweatshirts on.

I've only been to Sturgis once, in 1993. The wife and I rode our bikes from home (Washington State) through Glacier National Park, across Montana to Sturgis, stayed three days at the bike rally and explored the Black Hills area, then back across Wyoming through Grand Teton National Park, Yellowstone National Park and back home. Never turned a wheel on the freeways, did it all on the two-lane backroads. That's the only way to ride. Wherever I go I do it on the old roads. Someday, before I get too old to throw a leg over the scooter, I'd like to spend about two years riding around the USA on nothing but the backroads. The only way to see what's left of what used to be America.

No I am native, born and raised.

The reason SD is so great is because it is not full of people.

Course I am talking about the east and west coast liberals who like to move into an area and change everything. I am sure you would be our type of guy.

warpig i live on east side of the river ted's land is on the west side.....to tell you the truth when i first heard that he was buying land out there i figured that we would be hearing about him swinging from a tree.. he bought a lot of land at a price that no young farmer or rancher could ever compete with ...knowing some of them guys out there i am suprized like i said that he didnt end up swinging from a tree.

hdwrench i dont know of any land for sale in area i live just north of the missouri river (big bend dam) on the edge of the river breaks as far as land value it varies a lot depending on where it is at, who it next to ectect...i have some of the better farm land in my county, guess i would'nt take less than 500$/acre. pasture land seems to be it the $350/ac or so +or-
also you aint seen weather till you have been throught a northern plains blizzard... -25 to -30 below temp with 30-40 mph wind that makes the windchill around -70 below cant see your hand in front of your face
but dont let that scare you i have lived through it all my life just buy a snowmobile and dress warm and enjoy :-)

cowdoc, My brother lives in Pierre. He owns Dakota Spray Foam. It is a spray foam insulation business.

My dad has a hunting place on Spring Creek and we do quite a bit of goose/pheasant/grouse/turkey hunting. Trying to get one of the 20 antelope tags in Sully county right now. Already got a any deer tag for Stanley county across the lake.

Lowrider & Harleeman1030;That has been our dream for years, like you said "before I get too old to throw a leg over the scooter" All the way to Alaska. YA.hdwrench; We can make it to Sturgis in less than a days ride, but we don't really want to go anymore. Lately we can't seem to pull it off anyway. Too many yuppies, with their motorhomes, and trailered bikes, who would not know what it would be like, to actually RIDE the darn thing. It just ain't what it used to be.I have to agree with Warpig883, When you are born and raised in the "central" states, you see the increasing damage, that having so many people move in, and bring their "mostly" stupid ideology with them, has caused. You are not inclined to invite more trouble. If I could choose I would have (some) of the people here on this board, move here. As long as I could throw 5000 of the degenerates back to the coasts, (or wherever they came from), for every one that came here.

If I knew then, what I know now.

I'm up for it. Let's all take a couple of years off and just bum around the country on our bikes. Maybe we could call it some kind of research project and get a govt. grant to fund it.

A buddy and I are going to take a little ride next month. (Yeah, my ol' lady is really gonna let me go). He has a daughter in the Las Vegas area and his dad lives in Casa Grande, Arizona, so I'm going to take a ride along with him while he goes visiting. Going to leave on Sept. 6th and come back (IF I come back) on the 15th.

My buddy is kinda new to riding and was just planning to get on the freeway and go. When he asked me if I'd like to go along I told him "sure", as long as I could plan the route. NO FREEWAYS FOR ME!!! We'll head southeast across Washington, across the northeast corner of Oregon and the southwest corner of Idaho, south through Utah and into Arizona to Casa Grande. Then up through Arizona, catch some of old Route 66 around Kingman, across Hoover Dam and into Las Vegas, then north, up through Nevada and Idaho to Missoula, Montana and west over Lolo Pass and down the Clearwater River into Washington and back home. Should work out to about 4000 miles. I haven't been on a good road trip in two years and I'm pretty pumped to go. My friend might actually turn into a motorcyclist after a few thousand miles of American backroads. He has around ten thousand miles on his new Polaris Victory and I'll bet 80% of them were rolled up on the freeways. He's fixing to find out what good riding is all about.

Any of you motorcycling/gun totin' folks live anywhere along our proposed route? Wanna get together for a beer/coffee/soda pop?
