Bushmaster vs. Olmpic Arms AR-15

O.K. guys, I have been notified by Mrs. Claus that Santa might be getting me an ar-15. Question, which is better as far as quality? I understand that Olypic comes with a lifetime warranty. I prefer one with a factory muzzle brake or compensator and of course a 223. Thanks in advance for any and all input, it will be apreciated by Mrs. Claus.

If your buying to collect go for the Colt, If you want something that shoots great, & holds its value buy a Bushmaster and dont look back! You'll never regret it!

Always remember your A,B,C's. Armalite Bushmaster and Colt! The other brand is Stoner but usually pricey. For collection purposes pre-ban colt's are hard to beat. If you want one you're actually gonna use, Bushmaster and Armalite are the way to go (Armalite has lifetime warranty)

Saw a fella at the range today with an "out of the box" Bushmaster shoot a one inch group at 50 yds. And the trigger was as smooth as a custom job according to someone I regard as one of the best and most knowledgeable in this area.Thats good enough for me! I am saving up starting now for one of my own.

I understand that Bushmaster has only a 1 year warranty and Olympic Arms has a lifetime warranty. Is that seomthing to really consider?

Not that I'd own an inferior rifle like the AR, but I hear that Bushmaster is the way to go as far as quality. If that doesn't do it, keep in mind that Olympic Arms were the idiots that made those AR pistols, thus giving the BATF all that they needed in order to ban an entire class or ammunition. However, don't buy either and get a Romanian AK.

I have a Bushmaster AR15 and a Professional Ordinance Carbon 15. I love them both and the only problems I've had with either were with magazine cycling problems. One bad thing about the pro ord is the lack of a forward assist so you have to down load mags by a few rounds for proper feeding, but man is it one light weight and fun s.o.b.

I would like to take the opportunity to echo Evil. If you ain't got an Ak go buy a Sar. If you do, go get your Bushey and a dust cover for it. Aks rule, ever try bump firing an AR?

I have owned a Colt, an Olympic Arms and a Bushmaster. I still own the Bushmaster. It is reliable and shoots very well. I do not colleect and i do not need something that is not mil spec. My 2 cents

Thanks for all the input, Evil, I have a maadi and an sar-3. Low price, but fun guns, Me and my wife allways catch attention at the range. I read at an ammo web site (forgot which one) that using chea russian ammo in most ar-15's casue a jamming problem. Something about the Lauqer coating melting and then drying and hardening. I am just looking for another fun gun to scope and shoot. I think that from what I've heard and seen, I am leaning towrds a Bushmaster with Olympic arms following close behind. The price of the Olympic is lower than the bushmaster, but the bushmaster has only a 1 year warranty?

Yes, but the Bushmaster's are mil-spec and the Olympics are just cheap poodle poop. You get what you pay for. As far as the Wolf brand's laquer jamming up AR's, I've never had it happen and I shoot Wolf religiously. Listen to the Super Monkey. AR-15's are for small children and women. Get an AK. If you want a long range shooter, step up to the plate and get an M1A. Now that I've insulted the honor of AR-15 owners everywhere, I'll scoot back into my hole.

Have to go with the Bushmaster, own one that I bought right here on Gunbroker, the best sight I have found to locate, sell, and buy firearms and like materials.I am a military man, and my Bushmaster performs just as good or not better than my M-16. I would opt for the A2 sight, and I love the target grip available, its aftermarket mine is DPMS and it really enhances your grip. I also went for the target barrel, have shot over 500 rounds at one outing, without a jam, and would purchase another like it in a heartbeat. I own others, but that is one of my favorites...hope this helps.....swishman

If you want a good out of the box AR 15 go with Bushmaster. If you want a great AR 15 start with any manufacturer's stripped forged receiver, buy the remaining components separately and learn how to assemble/build the entire rifle.

I'm kind of new to "building" a gun. What are the lagalities with this. I notice a lot of parts kits, what about serial #'s, registering etc.?? Does anyone know?

The serial numbered "receiver" is considered a firearm whether it is assembled into a complete weapon or not. Since you are not yet familiar with building AR rifles we'll rule out any class III receivers for machine guns and focus on post '94 semi auto receivers pertinent to your Bushmaster/Olympic Arms Christmas wish list.Assuming you reside in a free state and starting with a new semi auto receiver as a foundation for your rifle, by law you are only allowed to install barrels with an overall length of 16 inches and have no threaded ends for flash-suppessors or lugs attached for a bayonet or can you use M16 fire control parts and carriers. Other than these prohibited parts and features you can do most anything to make it reliable and shoot straight. I have seen several videos listed on this site for the legalities and assembling an AR 15--you might want to bid on one.

what about parts kits for L1A1's and ak's and uzis etc... The ak's, some come with bayonetts and flash hiders etc..

If you want a traditionally configured Ak it will have to be a pre-ban to have the screw on muzzel brake and/or bayonet. Pre-ban Ak's run any where from 500-1000. Besides, do you really want a bayonet on there?

I have an Armalite Ar-15 which I believe has a better overall fit and finish to it than either the Bushmaster or Oly. It is a little more costly but I believe it is worth the difference. If the choice remains between the Bushmaster or Oly. Get the Bushmaster....

Seems that Bushmaster has the lead. About the Ak-47 bayonet, Like I'm going to use it, besides it's ugly. I have a romanian and am contemplating putting a ak-74 styl brake on it. I understand that it would have to be welded on to be legal.

BUY AN ARMALITE!!! Great gun, so well made, and a trigger pull to die for. I looked at Armalite and Bushmasters and a few Colts, and I decided that as I was buying something I was going to own for the rest of my life, I wanted the best right out of the box. I bought the Armalite and never looked back. Only one thing: I have the one with the three slots on each side muzzle break, and it shoots the blast right back into your left ear. It is shockingly loud. You have to wear ear plugs, but if you do you won't mind it at all.

I allways wear ear protection. Well, Sanat is lokking to spen about $850 max, so the colt is out of the question, the Armalites are up th ere too. I might have to go with the Bushmaster with the non telescopic stock.
  • thesupermonkeythesupermonkey Member Posts: 3,905 ✭✭

Taxijohn, You could't have the telescopic stock on a post ban weapon anyway. If you wanted a preban your talkin' an easy 1500 to 2000.You're probably thinking about the New M4's that LOOK like they have a telescopic stock, but actually its fixed.
  • taxijohntaxijohn Member Posts: 111 ✭✭

You are right, I meant the telescopic stock that does not move. It's there, just won't move.
