WEB EXTRA: News in Brief: Armed Robber Takes Hostages at College Avenue Clothing StoreDiscuss this article in the Daily Cal forums. By NATE TABAKDaily Cal Staff WriterWednesday, October 31, 2001 A man armed with a handgun robbed a clothing store in South Berkeley Monday night, holding hostage four people, before making off with an undisclosed sum of money, police said Tuesday. After the suspect entered Ovation, a women's clothing boutique on College Avenue, shortly after 6:30 p.m., he took out a handgun and pointed it at a cashier. The suspect then ordered the cashier to take the customers to the back of the store, said Berkeley Police Lt. Cynthia Harris. But when a female customer objected, the suspect punched her in the eye, Harris said. The four customers and employees were herded into the store's bathroom. The suspect then took undisclosed amounts of money from customers and from the cash register before he fled on foot. Harris described the suspect as a black male with a mustache, in his mid-20s or mid-30s and between 5 feet 9 inches and 6 feet 1 inch tall. He weighs 175 to 210 pounds and was last seen wearing a black leather jacket, a black hat and black pants. Detectives are investigating the case, but no suspects have been identified. http://www.dailycal.org/article.asp?id=6893
