Ideas For Vacuum Sealers?............

Got one for x-mas and can't wait to seal up something. I have considered powder in large quantities, vegetables from garden, bait for fishing, leftovers, etc. anything you might have thought of that is out of the ordinary?

They work GREAT for fresh fish. I have also used them to package camping gear like matches and maps that you want to keep dry. My father uses the vacuum sealer for just about everything, he buys food in bulk (like bacon) and then freezes smaller portions.

To save money I buy my primers 10,000 at a time. Seal 200 to a package and store in my basement.

thanks guys. Anyone know weather sealing powders will have an adverse affect on density? I would tend to think not, but I havn't studied density changes in different environments. I also thought about storing the military ammo in the cases to give better SHTF shelf life, or just to store it when a good deal comes along. I also thought about sealing my baseball cards from when I was younger and just throwing them in the attic for about 20yrs.

JestC: Let all of us here on the board know what the results are when that hot wire seals that bag with 2 or 3 pounds of powder in it.

For long term storage- brass and ammo in a moist climate, and I have an extra revolver that I keep in the back of my pickup..no rust or corrosion noted yet.

talon, I would leave it in the sealed containers. I considered buying the 8lbs at a time and saving all of the hazardous materials fees over time.

NO DON'T DO IT MAN, YOU'LL GO BLIND.If you're going to freeze fresh fish, put them in salt water (you make your own, no need to find an ocean, but use UNiodized salt)Then freeze. It'll come just as fresh as new.

Justc...got one just prior to Y2KBUST. besides the obvious, foods and the like...I use mine for most everything.(1) My survival materials: waterproof matches fire starting *tender" which includes my EMERGENCY thermite "type" of sarter that will even fire up wet wood. A small amount of Bullseye powder. A few rounds of several type *ammo Compass, etc. etc. *TENDER: Wood shavings I picked up from a wood shop that were the scraps that had been turned from a wood lathe, these look like long wooden springs ignite readily/better than "chips" And here is a GREAT tender my Dad told me about..you have PLENTY all the time right in your home, best part..FREE! when you empty your filter of your dryer..save the LINT! put it up in a zip-lock bag till you get the amount you want. I gather it in a baggie, set a weight on it for a couple of days to compact it TIGHT, then vac seal it. DANGER! DANGER! ..this stuff, or should I say the fine airborn particles of it (lint) is highly exsplosive, so use some care. It is totally safe compressed *AMMO: Above and beyond your carry ammo vac. seal a few rounds that match what you are carrying. I also vac seal one of my mini-mag lights extra bulb and batteries NOTE:I use 35mm film cannisters to put the thermite "type" fire starter powder in, same goes for my gun powder..then vac pack those (2)I always carry a field cleaning kit on my trips & I vac pack my cleaning patches/place those along with some small rags in a zip baggie (3)Always carry a first aid/misc. kit also I vac pack my bandages, bandaids, liquids alcohol, peroxide, etc. that I have MARKED & transferred to smaller bottles thread, sewing needles etc. I always Mark smaller containers again 35mm film cannasters work great to store headache, pain pills, Tums or the like, vitamins,,,then vac pack em. Suture packs, tweezers, forceps & scaples vac pack well. Ought to get your mind working......... thank you Eagle Scout..DR.RUGERNUT...

Friend of my daughter's was reading over my shoulder and wanted to know what a 35mm canister is... Is that a canister that measures 35mm across, or 35mm tall, or HxW or area or what. Now that is what you call Digitally impaired.

If you are going to seal up something that is subject to corrosion (assuming no vaccum takes out ALL of the air), order some "Rust Blox Vapor Tabs" from Brownells and toss one inside of each bag. Otherwise, throw in a small dessiccant packet. After you throw all of this in a sealed PVC pipe, make sure you bury it vertically and then bury little piles of nails several inches below the soil all over the area. It confuses the metal detectors. Also, line your hat with aluminum foil. It blocks out the mind-controlling alien electromagnetic waves.

RUGERNUT3- hey just something you may like to try for a firestarter. when i was a kid we used to make these when we were out in the woods, and store 'em (the longer they set the better). first get a few paper sized sheets of birch bark, some lint (probably more luck finding this in your drier than in the woods i'm thinkin'), reindeer moss, shavings of birch bark, and a few bird's nests. also you need to find a balsam (i think i recall correctly it may be another type of pine just look for one with fairly smooth bark and it has little bubbles almost like zits) squeeze these "zits" to expel the sap which is extremely flamable. arrange all these together on seperate sheets of the bark and spread the sap into this generously and roll it up into the bark. i shoot for about 1-2" thick by about 6" long. after rolling seal it with more sap and tie off with bailing twine. they burn long, hot, and slow. very effective and compact.

all this time I thought that just having a quantum lighter was enough. What about deisel soaked saw dust? that's what we use to start the cavernous fireplace at the hunting lodge. I bet that would seal nicely, not very volitile and burns slowly enough to start wet wood also. What about dried food? Anybody have any ways of doing that and sealing it?

JustC- mine does that too sometimes. when it does that i usually have to back out of the forums completely. usually just go and putz around at the auctions for a while and when i come back it's up. question though, when it does that to you does the thread show that another reply has been posted?

exactly. Sometimes if I go back to the boards and reclick the thread like 5 or 6 times, it will eventually load the new posts. I will often count them when they appear and I know that it hasn't shown them all. But like I said, sometimes it takes quite a few trys, and then you will see it take longer to load and you know it has them that time. You seeing any of that?

A little while back there was a thread about storing guns and one post suggested storing in vacuum sealed plastic guns that would not be used for some time. Well oiled of course and a dissicant thrown in would not hurt.

I thought about storing some guns in bags, but, I can't seem to let any go without shooting them. I have a nazi marked k98 that I considered doing that too, but, someone offered me some $$ for it and I might have to let her go. Matching #'s, stock marked ss/129. Bit other than that, I like shooting them all. I also thought about pictures and magazines(ammo) if you aquire an excess of good ones. Seal most, practice with a few.

If you do store guns put wood in seperatebag lots of moisture in wood, its good to keep it there.maybe oil wood first and seal before volitiles dry, will they affect plastic?how long?maybe fill barrel with grease/soak in dieselfirst, heat before putting in bag?I live next to salt water and seal my guns in plastic if I don't plan to use them in 60 days, and clean, oil, inspect the rest monthly. It hurts to see rust on an investment.good idea about baseball cards, but put in ammo can though mice suck.
