Confounded new gas cans

..Every one of them dribbles gas all over. I see that "other auction site" has the old style spouts again. They were gone for a quite a while. $12 for two is pricey but it beats the aggravation of those stupid double safety dribblers that you need three hands to manipulate.

I cut the locking device out of the spout and drilled a half inch hole in the top, opposite of the spout and put a valve stem from a car rim without the valve stem in the half inch hole.Screw the valve stem cover off when you pour gas for ventilation.Works good.

We learned about the safety cans from a federal coal mine inspector. He came to our work site and checked our service trucks, cranes, pilot trucks and tractor trailers along with our personal safety gear. I understand the safety aspect of the cans but change and make something that works and is not more dangerous than what it replaced. I worked in the coal business for more than 35 years and finally had to get out a year before my SS went into effect cause the "New Stuff" got too much for the "Old Stuff" ---Me. Whew, that hurt.

You stole my thunder. Been doing that trick for about two years now. Just did that to our new cans two weeks ago[;)]

You can buy the little vent cap gizmos and install them on metal or plastic cans. Packs of ten.

Like buddyb, I just remove the locking part of spout, but I simply drill a small hole about where the relief hole would be and plug it with a golf tee.

I call them GOVERNMENT gas cans or Obamacan. Don't blame the manufacturers. Manufacturers have to make gas cans that way to comply with GOVERNMENT regulations of face stiff fines.

You can modify all you want as long as you do it at home. A business can be heavily fined if they are caught with a modified Obamacan.

As others have said, yard sales! I've accumulated so many 50-cent gas cans I don't know what to do with them (i.e., hoarding[:I]). Also, my community has a household-waste recycle facility that accepts used engine oil, and lots of people bring in used oil in gas cans and leave the cans behind. The facility then puts out the gas cans for free after emptying them of the oil. I got a 5-gallon one as recently as Tuesday. I also find good cans at swap meets. Lots of sources for old cans if you have the time and patience to look around.[:)]

..I've been cutting out the ratchet on the cap and that locking button. Still the press handle is a pain and mine leak. I've also been putting in the tire stems, sans the valve core for vents. I ordered some new "water can" spouts from that "other site". We'll see.
..This is the video I saw some time back on cutting out the safeties, but it still leaves that lever valve.
