The Savage is Ready to Roar

'Ol son in law can't make it up to go deer hunting, I think the wife put the kibosh on it. They are Atlanta yuppies, what do you expect.
So, bad knee or not it falls on my shoulders to get venison this year.
I literally dusted off the fierce Savage muzzleloader.
I made 3 practice shots all last year, and one in the woods. A 200 pound 8 pointer fell dead. I am cranking out 3,100 foot pounds with a 250 SST.
With my knee I can't make it to the range, but I do baby that scope and I figured the rifle would be on.
When I killed the 8 pointer a year ago I immediately reloaded, and haven't touched the rifle since. The rifle has not been cleaned in 3 years.
Off my porch, I only have a 42 yard shot, but that is good enough, as the longest shot from my stand is just 75 yards.
I gimped down to my target tree with my crutch and target in the left hand and machete in the right. I had to clear out some brush.
I already have the rifle sighted in at 200, thus it is 1/2 inch high at 42 yards.
First shot, 1/2 high and 1/2 to the left. Yowsuh!
I waited ten minutes for the barrel to cool and took another shot. Dead on windage, 1/2 inch high. It was touching the first shot.
That's good enough for me and bad news for Buckie or Bambi.

It is a wonderful thing to have a muzzleloader that is that accurate and powerful, and that you don't have to clean when you shoot.
That SST hits the deer like the Hammer of Thor!
I love the Savage.

ps I have a Sightron S2 3-9 scope, that is one great scope.

    Good luck!

I plan to do a little retro hunting as well, but I'll be using a Winchester Model 1892 44-40 Saddle Ring Carbine!

If you can't feel the music; it's only pink noise!

If smokeless powder is legal in a persons particular state, I truly can't understand using any muzzleloader other than the Savage - unless maybe you gotta have the smoke & like cleaning the gun after you've taken care of your deer....

Is it a good idea to leave a muzzleloader charged for a year?

Maybe you should unload it and clean it before you try it on a buck.

Smokeless powder. Needs to be cleaned about as often as a 30-06.

smokeless powder isn't corrosive, however, I just fire mine at the end of the season to clear it. I leave it fouled too since the savages shoot better with some fouling in the rifling. Savage even stated NOT to clean it until accuracy drops off.[8D]
