Gun shop owner, employee indicted

A federal grand jury yesterday charged a Bristol Township gun dealer and an employee with committing fraud against the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

A 25-page indictment claims shop owner Robert Stover, 76, and employee Stephen Passio, 45, advertised Bob's Gun Shop on Bristol Pike in Croydon as the place for criminals to anonymously buy guns and ammunition.

If convicted of criminal conspiracy, fraud and related crimes, Stover faces a maximum sentence of 100 years in prison and a $4.25 million fine; Passio, a maximum sentence of 60 years in prison and a $2.5 million fine. Both live in Philadelphia and have yet to turn themselves in to federal authorities, said Rich Manieri, the spokesman for the U.S. attorney's office in Philadelphia.

Stover declined comment but said his store is still open for business, and Passio said he wasn't yet ready to talk because he wasn't aware of the specific allegations.

According to the indictment, between March 2000 and April 26, the pair sold guns without disclosing the actual buyers on the federal forms, using the names of phantom buyers to hide the identities of the gun buyers. In some instances, the buyers were convicted criminals from New Jersey, the indictment indicated.

In all, 17 guns were sold using the scheme, authorities said.

My question is,....if the phantom name didn't match up with the SS#, how did the background check ever go through? Sounds like there is something else in the mix to me. And 17 guns was all they come up with? I thought by the account that these guys were supplying the whole drug trade or something.

A great rifle with a junk scope,....is junk.
