EMAIL WARNING!!!

edited April 2002 in General Discussion
I got an email yesterday from "captainkirk" the moderator of the Experts Forum.

It said to download this software to protect myself from a computer virus. Well, before I did, I checked with him on the board. He said he did not send it, AND he got a email from ME saying he should do the same thing.

I got no problems from my computer so far, but any mail impersonating someone you know is NOT good news.

DELETE IT IMMEDIATELY

Not sure if it's related or not, but I also got a letter from "njretcop" that was completely blank. I wrote back but got no reply. Was that really you NJ?

I got two blank e-mails yesterday; the subject line was the only thing filled and the subject material indicated it is related to the GunBroker site (my hotmail account is the one I use with GB and my auctions were relisted yesterday).

Somebody at a WI technical school also e-mailed me saying she had received a blank e-mail from me.

I wonder if GB's server has a virus?

    Anybody else experience anything similiar?

GB does not have a virus. The GB mail server contains anti-virus sw that scans every email, and all staff members have anti-virus sw installed locally as well.

There is a really nasty email virus going around that spoofs the sender's address by picking something out of your address book. It could be anyone in your address book. They aren't really sending you the emails, it's coming from an infected computer somewhere that has your email address. If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, get the latest security updates from the Microsoft website immediately (www.microsoft.com).

I have also taken additional precautions, including setting my security on Internet Explorer to High (doesn't allow any incoming scripts or programs to run), then I created a list of trusted sites like this one so that they can display and operate correctly. I get at least six virus emails a day and this prevents the viruses in them from running.

Another solution (that will cost some $) is to get an anti-virus program like McAfee or Norton, download the latest updates for it, and have it scan all incoming emails for viruses.

    I'm not infected!

I'm using a Mac; it's so nice to be immune!

Two to three days ago I received some e-mails that were apparently very large in size, but nothing was there when I opened them. They took up a great deal of space in my hotmail account and didn't have anything there, not even an attachment. My hotmail account was at it's max capacity because of these e-mails.

None of them were from gunbroker, but one was from a different firearms site. I forwarded them back to the sender asking the purpose, and didn't get any responses.

I also got an e-mail with an attachment warning of the virus, and deleted it immediately. I figure I'll trust McAfee to warn me of such activity. And I have had some McAfee warnings in the last couple of days.

I too, got an email from Kirk. Same message. However, Mr. Norton said it was a bad thing, so I deleted it.

    v35,

I forget what EXACTLY the message said, but it definetly made mention of "Klez"

I have norton too, but it did not detect anything. Either I need to upgrade or I wasn't at risk.

    To the comphewter wizards...?
Is it possible that responding to polls like Netscapes, visiting anti gun-hunting-political web sites that our addresses can be gotten, pirated and trouble sent our way?
Not comphewter literate, just a key banger.I think you have the idea of what I'm trying to ask about.

W32Klez.gen@mm... A nasty computer virus, I've been told.

In the last day. I have recieved 3 of these types of mail.

One said it was from norton. in the properties it said it was just from some address.
the other 2 were from some internet mail.
    these email addresses :
    sgwymer@shentel.net
    bahlmh@visuallink.com
    netsil@adelphia.net
These were the only three addresses I could find in the properties on these mails.
One was deleated instantly. The one from Norton.

    All had an attachment.

If you go to the task??? bar at the top. click View, then layout, then turn off preview pane.
I have been told this virus is running rampant by the Comp. tech I know.Never thought I'd get it from a reputable site.

So far been saved by the no preview pane.
Hope it works for you guys too.
    Scott
Are we who are going to the gun and sites to talk about them being targeted?
Or is someone just being a jerk off?

    Blank emails

If you use Netscape for your email and you download one that appears blank go to your tool bar click view and from the drop down menu click page source. Then read the mesage if any text was in the message.

This free software will filter your mail is you do not use a third party POP3 i.e. Hot Mail, Yes Mail, AOL, Juno, Yahoo etc.
