I have .280 and 30-06, leaning towards 300WSM or something for varmit (22-250 - .220swift - 243???????) I do want a good 500yrder. Just rounding out for a good selection. I may hold off on the 300 for now as my 30-06 is a good highpower.... let the melee begin.....

Saxon, can you please let me know where you hunt so I don't get in the same woods with you!! I want to know, do you eat the squirrels? Blue tic, no collection is complete without a .22-250. You have to have one.I would also get a .243. Those things are a great all around gun for varmits to deer. There are guys around here who hunt black bear with them and have good luck, not me, I want something bigger for bear. Get the .22-250, I nicknamed mine AT%T.

300 grain bullet for varmits? 500 grain for game? Varmits are shot from a distance of 100- 300 yards on the average. A .460 zeroed @100 yds drops 39.0" @ 300 yds. A 22-250 zeroed @ 100 yds drops 7.8" @ 300 yds. The 55 grain bullet will travel at 3,600 fps and is plenty for varmits. Any large game can be taken with 200 grain bullets. (We have no elephants in the U.S.) The .243 is also well to take the average deer and has a good tragectory to 250 yds. and will use a varmit 70 grain bullet to a 100 grain bullet for average deer/animals. I see no problem with the .30-06 as this is one of the all time great game rifles, with bullets from 110 grains to 220 grains. It seems you would do well with a 22-250 with a 40 to 65 grain bullet for long accurate/precise shots. It is my opinion only!

Ruger 44 Magnum Automatic Carbine - older model, not the new one. Its small, light, short, not very loud, doesn't kick very hard, and has lots of stopping power.smokinggun

7mm--Saxon might eat the squirrels -- if he could find them afterward. There wouldn't be enough left for a "lick and a smell."

For varmints to 400 yds, I'm mighty partial to my .220 Swift.

You know I'll start something with this... What in the world is a 500 yd. gun? We shoot that far in the Corp. but I wouldnt call the .223 a 500yd. round, exactly. I know you varmint hunters make some pretty big claims to long shots, but I feel a round can only be a certain distance gun if it can be sighted in for that, whats the phrase, maximum point blank range, or something like that, where the bullet stays inside an 8" circle all the way out to the target without sight adjustment? So if I were looking for a varmint gun and a 500 yd. gun, I'd be hard put, but now, the 7mmSTW is real flat shooting, without burning too much powder like the Umags. I personally would go with a 25-06 or 257 Roberts, the Roberts just cause its the same as my last name, thought it'd be cool. They can both be used on varmints and deer sized game, flat shooting, versatile, easy to reload for, I believe, components cheap, yeah I talked me into it, how about you?

I want to know how many guys actually take a rangefinder to verify the yardages. I know some guys who after a chest patting session (like Tim Allen) and bragging about that long shot have made excuses after the bushnell yardage pro made them out to be fibbers.
