I watched "Dirty Harry" again last night...decided it might be interesting to see it again after so long.

I had a difficult time trying to determine the barrel length on his Mod. 29. Is it a 6" or the 8.375" ?

How do you know by the way?

Thanks in advance.

I'm sure it's the 8 3/8 in. Shortly after the movie came out Smith & Wesson was advertising the long barrel .44 mag as the Dirty Harry model, or words to that effect. My brother bought one way back when, went to the gun store and told them he wanted one of those Dirty Harry .44 Magnums and he came away with a blued S&W model 29 with 8 3/8 inch barrel. He still has that cannon. In a nice presentation wooden box.

    6 1/2 "
Memory jog!!! I'm now remembering 2 guns were used in filming. His standard carry was a 6 1/2", but for close- ups like"Make My Day, was it 5 or 6"they subbed an 8 3/8.

In some of the action scenes it was a 357 (I forget what model).

There is a serious blooper in the opening scene of Dirty Harry. What is it? Answer in stealth text below. Try to think about it before you 'ctrl a' ...The good inspector has the drop on the bad guy, hammer back, "I know what you're thinkin'. You wondering if I fired 5 shots or 6. To tell you the truth, I don't know myself, but seein' how this a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and could take your head clean off, you gotta ask yourself one question. 'Do I feel lucky?'"
The man surrenders, Harry uncocks his Smith and starts to put it away, and the guy says, "I gotta know, man." Harry pulls the gun back out and pulls the trigger, CLICK. See the blooper?

Well then it would not have been a Model 29 if it was a .41 mag. It would have been a model 57.

Someone please tell me how the hidden text thingy is accomplished. That was cool.

Fort Knox is right about 6 shots (#3 is heard but not seen), and there is a blooper neither of you mentioned. When Harry raises the .44 at the robber after the robber says "I gots to know," he cocks it. Cut to robber's p.o.v. and you see Harry pull the trigger, the cylinder rotates, and the hammer falls i.e. it's in double action mode. They missed that one!
