I chronographed CCI Hollow point Stingers at 940fps and Rem solid Vipers at 840fps out of a NAA mini revolver with 1-1/2" barrel today. They were the best of the group which also included Win Power Point(729fps), PMC(612fps), and Aguila Sub Sonic(530fps). I don't have bullet weights available so I havent calculated energies yet. It's hard to find performance of 22rf and 22wrfmag out of very short barrels because its pretty lousy and the mfr's dont want to advertize it. The Stinger might be the best bet of the 22s.

North American Arms has a very extensivetable with a wide variety of ammunition for each of their firearms & each barrel length on their web site. http://www.naaminis.com/ [This message has been edited by gruntled (edited 11-03-2001).]

Here is a test to try, go buy a box of .25 acp, then buy a box of .22 lr,after recovering from the sticker shock, you will see why the .22 is more desireable...

According to Sanow & Marshall's Handgun Stopping Power the best .25 acp rates a dismal 25% one-shot-stop ratio. In plain English that means that for every four shots delivered to the torso area, three will fail to stop your attacker from further violent acts. When you stop to consider that these statistics are based on real street shootings---not gelatin based calculations---this is quite shocking. here are some comparisons 25 acp to 22LR read on the for the whole 9 yards http://www.geocities.com/gunversation/mouseguns/mouseguns.htm

Thanks, Gruntled. It looks like the fmj .25 has 64ftlbs energy while the CCI Stinger has 63.2ftlbs. Being a lead, hollow point and moving at higher velocity, the Stingers' bullet might do more damage than the fmj .25 auto. I haven't heard any great claims of the .25 hollow points doing much expanding. Magsafe has a .25 round that claims to double factory energy and Quickshok has a fragmenting hyper velocity,.22lr they claim triples target damage by coming apart in three pieces at 1" barrel velocities. Something else to consider is if the .25 hp and specialty ammo will feed in the auto you're considering

Both .22 and .25 have excellent stopping power.....against chipmunks! For self-defense against people, get a real gun.

IF YOU WANT TO PISS OFF SOMEBODY SHOOT THEM WITH THE 25, AND THEN RUN. I ONCE HAD A HOG TO SLAUGHTER, AND DID MY OWN EXPERIMENT. SHOT THE HOG IN THE FOREHEAD WITH THE 25 AND IT JUST PLAIN PISSED HIM OFF. THE 22 WITH TWICE THE VELOCITY, DID HIM IN. ON THE FOREHEAD, WITH BOTH. MAYBE IN HUMANS IT WOULD BE DIFFERENT. BUT I HAVE NOOOO FAITH IN THE 25 AUTO. JUST GET A BIGGER GUN. ANYTHING IS BETTER!

want to do your own test? get 4 boards 1X4'S will do. yellow pine. Clamp them together and then shoot with the 25 and see how it penetrates. bet is wont even make it through the first board. Then try the 22. You will see.

According to Winchester's ammo catalog a 45 grain expanding point .25 acp has 815 fps muzzle velocity and 66 ft.lbs of muzzle energy, while a 34 grain 22 lr has1085 fps muzzle velocity and 105 ft.lbs energy at the muzzle and 92 ft.lbs at 100 yds. So at 1/10 of the price and superior ballistics the .22 is the way to go if your choice is between the two. Both these calibers are aneamic and would not be a good choice for self defense, but I guess the psych factor of having any firearm fired against you is a better defense than nothing. Do yourself a favor and get a .40 caliber or larger...

I knew the "piss somebody off" thing would surface in this thread.Over the years I have had numerous situations when someone in the store is lookin' at a 25 auto and an onlooker will pipe up "that thing would just make me mad." My standard come back "Want me to fill a magazine and really piss you off?"Nobody wants to be shot with anything but anyone that says being shot with a 22 or 25 would just piss thme off has never been shot or seen anybody shot. I personnaly know folks that have been buried because of each. And both were one shot kills. Given a choice, I would carry a 22 with stingers as they have more penetration.Truely though, given a choice I would choose something else.Just my fifty cents worth (I ain't cheap).

Back years when I lived in Alcorn county Mississippi, neighbored to the north by Mcnairy county Tennessee, THe then Sherrifof Mcnairy county, a one Buford pusser stopped a speeding on Hwy. 45 North and walked up to the drivers window and leaned on the opened window with one arm while asking for drivers license and V. regs. A passenger in the back seat opened up with a 25 auto. and empted a 5 r0und clip into Pusser. after the 3rd bullet had struck him it had kinda got his attention and he proceeded to draw his 357 the car quickly drove away, leaving Buford with 2 bullets in his neck neither striking the juglers and 1 lodged under the skin in front of his ear, having struck him under the eye and followed the bone around his face until it ran out of steam in front of his ear. I heard later that he remarked that the 25 could do little more than make someone mad.

Heck I wouldn't want to be shot with an air rifle but I wouldn't carry one for self defense

How about 32Acp vs 9mm. The only reason i considered 25 or 22 because the Beretta 21A is very small, but i found out that they also make a slightly larger version in 32ACP. Thank U ppl!!
