i PICKED UP AN OLD MILITARY LOOKING RIFLE WITH THE MARKINGS OF N.4 MkL THE LEFT SIDE OF THE RECEIVER ,ON TOP OF REC, IT IS STAMPED ENGLAND. THE STOCK REMOVES JUST IN BACK OF THE TRIGGER GUARD AND IT HAS A BAND ALL THE WAY AROUND THE STOCK ON THE BUTT STOCK THAT ATTACHES THE BUTT TO THE RECEIVER, HAS A BRASS BUTT PLATE WITH A FLIP COVER ON IT. WONDERING IF YOU WOULD KNOW SOME HISTORY ON THIS, DATE MADE,CALIB,WHERE IT WAS MADE. ANY INFO WOULD BE USEFUL. THANK YOU. FATBOBCAT

Sounds like you`ve got a British Endfield number 4 Mark 1.It`s a 303 caliber and was first made in 1931. After testing it was officially approved in late 1939 and used in WWII.They were made in numerous British facilities and in Canada at the Long Branch Arsenal. Also made in the US by Savage .

Sounds like a No.4 Mark I SMLE, one of the variants of the old British service rifle that saw use around the world. Should be chambered for .303 British.I dont do a whole lot with the old SMLE's, but I bet if you posted the serial number and all the markings on the left side of the receiver, somebody could tell you which arsenal manufactured it and roughly what year.
