Baldwin man seeks return of guns seized from his home By Associated Press, 12/7/2001 13:44 BRIDGTON, Maine (AP) A Baldwin man accused of assaulting his wife has gone to court seeking the return of a cache of weapons that Cumberland County Sheriff's deputies seized from his home. William C. Bloomquist, 43, has permits for the weapons and believes police have no right to hold them, said his attorney, Robert Andrews. ''Our contention is that ... their holding them is illegal,'' he said. The 81 weapons included a .30-caliber machine gun and dozens of semiautomatic rifles, along with more than 20,000 rounds of ammunition. Deputies had gone to the house to investigate a domestic abuse complaint by Katarina Pulkkinen, Baldwin's estranged wife. Bloomquist and Pulkkinen obtained protection from abuse orders from each other Thursday in District Court. Bloomquist had first filed his request Nov. 20, and Pulkinnen went to authorities later that week seeking protection from him. Pulkkinen's lawyer, Judith Wohl, said the ruling has no practical effect for her client because she plans to go through with a divorce. Andrews said the dual orders are rare, but that this is not a normal divorce. ''It's an exceptional circumstance and it leads back to the fact that this is an extraordinary domestic dispute that has turned very messy,'' he said. Police did not charge Bloomquist with any weapons violations, but Sheriff Mark Dion said his deputies took the guns because of concerns about Pulkkinen's domestic abuse complaint. Dion said the federal Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms also is looking into the case after police seized marijuana that was being grown at Bloomquist's home. Bloomquist is a licensed gun dealer, and Andrews said the confiscation of the weapons has impacted his client's livelihood. ''They are something Mr. Bloomquist needs, especially right now to provide for himself,'' Andrews said. http://www.boston.com/dailynews/341/region/Baldwin_man_seeks_return_of_gu:.shtml
