Redwood City offering reward to help find people firing guns on New Year's Eve (Published Friday, December, 28, 2001 5:10AM) Redwood City (AP) - - Redwood City police are renewing their annual "Silent Night" campaign to cut down on New Year's Eve gunfire - and this year there's an added incentive. The city will pay a $500 reward for information that leads to the arrest of anybody who fires a gun to celebrate the arrival of two-thousand-two.Police have distributed fliers to city neighborhoods telling residents about the reward and listing a special gunshot hotline number. The flier also reminds celebrants that it's a felony to discharge a firearm - and the district attorney's office will prosecute all offenders.Police will also be using some fancy technology to track down shooters. They have a system which uses sensors around the city to compute the source of gunshots and send officers to the scene.

A couple of years ago I was at a New Years party in north Dallas, one of the most populated areas of the city. At midnight we all went outside to listen. Must have been 200 distinguishable gunshots in about 5 minutes. Lots of firecrackers too but you can tell the difference from gunshots. Sounded like a war zone...and one had to wonder where all those bullets came down. Probably made roofers happy, though.
