I read Rifle and Rifle Shooter. Also Sundra's annual, The Complete Rifleman. As you might guess I don't play much with handguns, and can't offer any opinions on handgun mags.

Right now...Guns and American Handgunner, but only because my subscription doesn't expire for about 10 years or something. When they expire I'll just keep American Rifleman. They all seem to say the same thing lately."This is THE best gun for concealed carry."Then next month they say the same thing about a different gun. Then it's "this is THE best holster for concealed carry". Next month they tell you some other holster is THE best.I have no interest in reloading or ballisticsso those departments are useless for me.Gee, I don't usually ramble on like this Mudge the verbose

Gun Tests is the only truly objective and worthwhile gun magazine out there. G&A and Combat Handguns and all the rest of them are garbage. I remember a review I once read in Combat Handguns where the pistol failed three times on them in the first 100 rounds. They took it apart and tried to fix it, and finally had to send it back to the manufacturer to get it right. AND THEY GAVE THE THING A GOOD RATING!!! After that I just threw the rest of the issues in the trash and let my subscription run-out.The NRA publications are good, though. Gun Tests seems to review a lot of the guns I like and that's why I like it. It is not cheap, though, about $49 a year.

Guns & Ammo - Yeah, I know they're an "arm" of the gun manufacturers and they have a lot of ads, but they have a lot of pretty pics, cover a lot of ground, do classic tests, and oh yeah, "Cooper's Corner". Accept it for what it is, a +-35 page advertising brochure with some imaginitive articles now and then.American Rifleman - You ARE an NRA member, of course?Gun Tests - The "Consumer Reports" of the gun world, they accept NO outside advertising and don't give any B(arbara) S(treisand). They buy their guns the same way you do, through retail. They don't get specially "polished and honed" guns direct from the manufacturer guarenteed to work (the way G&A does). The Firing Line - The magazine of the CRPA (California Rifle and Pistol Association). You ARE a member of your state's Gun Rights org, of course?

Gun World and America's First Freedom. Was looking at getting a subscription to Gun Tests, but they billed me for free trial issues and that kinda upset me, so I let them go. Other than that, it was a good magazine.

My mainstays are American Rifleman and G&A. I don't disagree with any of the above criticism of G&A (expensive custom gun reviews, ads etc.) but I like its in your face enjoyment of all things relating to guns, and of course I do get a kick out of the Grand Old Man of Gunsite, Mr. Cooper.I've tried all the others. I too like Gun Tests but it is expensive for what you get, or maybe just for my wallet. It used to be that GUNS and AMERICAN HANDGUNNER had the best photography, the most tricked-out custom guns, and the least interesting articles. Things aren't quite as clear cut now as some publications (and writers) have changed hands. I still find that I like Combat Handguns and that other magazine directed more to Law Enforcement issues. I've even picked up a Soldier of Fortune once in a while. As for the overuse of words like BEST and PERFECT and ULTRA on the covers, I once read an editorial by Libourel or somebody fully admitting that this was purely a marketing ploy, that their marketing execs thought they sold more magazines off the shelves with such hyped up covers. So they do it, even though they know full well they're doing it. I've never cared for SHOOTING, for some reason, but haven't read one in years now. Flipping through, I still don't find as much to excite me. I want the dope on the latest stuff on the dealer's shelf as well as the best info on all the other stuff found for sale in this country, from evaluations of different brands of M1 Carbine to AR to AK to tactical shotgun to pocket gun to you name it, as well as the stats on all the ammo in the various calibers. I'll buy whatever it takes to get a decent article on something that interests me. I used to keep all my mags but dumped several hundred pounds of them when I moved last -- still feel a bit sorry to have lost the cover stories on the 629 snubbie, the first Glock 17, and the rest. Ah, well. Oh, and I'll buy SHOTGUN NEWS and GUN LIST, and log onto Gunbroker.com too. Course, I'm in a "hot" phase right now. I may settle down in a while.

I read America's First Freedom from the NRA. For some reason they changed my subscription from The Guardian.I read Guns & Ammo mainly for Cooper's column. If he ever goes away, I will probably stop.I will not read Shooting Times or any other PJS publication. I cannot tell you my reason without risking a libel action by one of their writers.Someone at PJS got my FFL and sent me a free subscription to Shooting Times. I told them to stop and they did not. I sent magazines back, and still they came. Now, I figure this is costing them money each month for something I toss out, so let them come.

I'll read them all, time permitting. Then, I'll make up my mind as to what is BS and what's not. I've found useful info in some of the worst publications and some real horse hockey in the most highly thought of. I guess it all depends on each persons version of useful, though.Tideman

Ayoob is a butt. That said, I read G&A and America's First Freedom. It kind of went without saying that the"judge" reads SOF.

For the longest time I thought I was the only one with that specific opinion on Ayoob...what a relief. Mustve tried a dozen subscriptions over the years and never renewed any of em except for American Rifleman (which is free anyway) and Shotgun list. Im a 1911 enthusiast, but just how many reviews of the same thing can you include in twelve issues? and the one review I actually paid attention to...burned me. Bought a Steyr M series pistol, not only did it drop about $300 from MSRP, I also had to return it to GSI for repairs twice. this from a pistol that got a good review!good thing I discovered this little spot on the net, otherwise who knows what other ungodly things I would have done to my equipment.-smooth
