so i'm just back from mongolia(2 wks)and i'd thought i'd share a bit of what i thought was a great fishing trip. too many fish on the dry fly...and what a great place to hunt(tho' i didn't...maybe next time). the people were great(except the black market pickpockets who almost got more than they bargained for and none of what they wanted). the only place i know of where wolves carry away sheep nightly and livestock footprints cover every square inch of 2,000,000 square kilometers of dirt- where you can get thrown and stomped by a pony- where fish like this one are in every river- where there are no fences(soon not true). where wasp stings immoblize your bones. where you find 5 pounds of butter stored under herdsmans beds. where even the good roads deteriorate into the worst forest trail 2-track. get there as soon as you can before guys like me and you(not to mention the russians) ruin it all. bring a snakebite kit and american toilet paper. try not to drop your camera in the water(like me). watch out for the arrack(fermented mares milk) and unpastuerized cow milk. bring a shotgun for the grouse and waterfowl, a rifle for the rest. save your money and email me for next year...jrocko@lycos.com

I looked into taking an Asian Wapiti hunting trip over there, prices seemed quite resonable. Had to provide your own transportation to Beijing, China....then take a train into Mongolia....don't think I would want to do it alone though.....nice picture!

    Is that a Steelhead?!

Sounds like an amazing trip! I'd love to go. Most exotic fishing trip for me was for dolphin fish in the Florida keys.

Great tips, I'll remember them if I ever get to Mongolia.

the fish is a taimen...the also have huge pike , a fish called a lenok- that looks almost exactly like a brown trout except for an underslung mouth, grayling, and strange perch. the taimen pictured is an ok fish- they get much larger(6-7 ft. and approach 200 pounds for a world record). while i was posing for this photo the fish snapped his jaws a few times...sounded like a crocodile- and what a huge mouth they have...a picture of a fish our guide caught this summer had a fish he could've put his head into!....great bird country, saw some deer type animals and it was pretty cool to see fresh lone wolf tracks in the river sand- not to mention hear them and listen to the local herdsmen complain of their predation. horses cost 60.00 and i saw at least 2 instances of guys carrying live sheep on their motorcycles. live sheep on their apartment deck...sheep pretty much everywhere. when more of my film is developed, i'll post some more...
