Barrel Length. A short barrel .40 may be equal to a longer barrel 9mm. Short barrel 9mm will perform just a little better than a .380
that is only to consider power. from the above discussion (and the OP) terminal effectiveness doesn't entirely depend on power.

anyways to answer the question, here is a comparison of those 3 calibers. all are Federal HydraShok.

    (data from ballisticsbytheinch.com)

    .40 180 grain
    2, 318
    3, 371
    4, 418
    5, 441
    6, 467

    9mm 147 grain
    2, 229
    3, 266
    4, 295
    5, 331
    6, 346

    .380 90 grain
    2, 146
    3, 170
    4, 199
    5, 220
    6, 229

    the 9mm must have a 4.5" barrel to equal a 2" .40, and cannot equal even a 3" .40 unless you go over 6"

    the .380 must have a 6" barrel to equal a 2" 9mm

I kept the same ammo mfr and model, only different calibers, to illustrate the power difference in barrel length.

I know in the OP I was saying "any mediocre 9mm has 388 ft-lb" well that's sort of true, there are a few that have 400 to 440 ft-lb. out of a 4" barrel (Cor-Bon and Speer Gold Dot) those aren't mediocre. but that sort of power can be had with a 9mm.

that same mfr, model, and barrel length, in .40 cal, would give you 100 ft-lb more.

my point in the OP was do you really need that much? I thought 388 ft-lb was enough, 400-440 in a 9mm should be quite enough. I think 500-520 in a .40 may be overkill and you can use 9mm instead to get more magazine capacity and less recoil.

    ?? well ??

Yeah, some things are a trade off. I carried a Colt Officers Model .45 for awhile. Never could get it to function anywhere close to 100% plus it was heavy.
The .380 I've used in a Walther and now a Beretta. It will penetrate a Cadie door just fine. Out to fifty yards, it will do about the same as a standard 9mm round.
what's the barrel length on those and what do you think about .380 in a 2.75" barrel, such as in an LCP or P3AT?

I am most comfortable with a 45 ACP 1911 so that is what I carry.

Either a Kimber Pro or Ultra Carry, or, when the social situation demands, a Colt Commander.

I shoot the better than anything else I own. I am 100% sure that any of the three will fire, eject and re-chamber every time.

If I felt that way about the S&W 357 hammerless, I would carry it.

    Busch,
I did all my experimenting using a PPk with a 3.2" barrel. The Beretta I carry now has a 3.7 inch barrel so if anything it's a little more powerful.

I have no experience with the two pistols you mentioned but would assume you will be losing some velocity and gaining some muzzle flash. Another thing I discovered with the PPk was that most off the shelf .380 hollow points don't expand reliably so I opted to go FMJ for penetration instead.

I feel comfortable carrying my 9mm with 127 gr +P+ SXTs or 115 gr +P Corbons, .40 180 gr SXTs or my Duty 230 gr +P SXTs....but I'd prefer to have my rifle with 62 gr PSPs..

As stated shot placement is key.

5" Springfield with 155 gr Underwood pops out 600 ft pds of energy. No 9mm is going to do that. ( out of a 4 or 5" barrel )

nah, the 10mm has too much recoil and overpenetrates.
Well, yes. 10mm is not for everyone. I believe the Feds passed on it in favor of the (comparatively wimpy) 40 S&W because the recoil was too much for the little girlie-girl female agents.

And yes, the 10mm will accurately reach out and touch someone, even through things like car doors or a couple layers of drywall, and deliver a large amount of energy.

Those are the two best reasons that I like! [;)]
