Computer connection questions....

Ha, this time its a question BEFORE I mess up. I know not normal for me. [:D]

Here it is, if I run a VGA cord that is 50ft long from a hard drive to a monitor will I lose quality or have any problems due to the length of the cord?

I am asking before I make plans and buy the cord I need. Feels all weird asking first. [:o)]

people don't normally do that with monitors, but they do with ceiling projectors. so you will be able to find answers to that question.

if it is a good quality VGA cable you can do 50 ft. if it's not working you will get a "no signal". if you need more than 50 ft you can use a "signal buffer".

    read this
    http://www.cablechick.com.au/blog/cable-length-guide/

quote:VGA accommodates many resolutions, each of which requires a different amount of bandwidth. As cables get longer, the available bandwidth decreases and with it the highest potential display resolution is lowered. A short VGA cable can manage 1920x1080 without trouble. A long VGA cable may top out at 1024x768, and our longest offering may struggle to reach 800x600.

DVI-D (digital) cables can't go as far as VGA does.

p.s. the monitor doesn't connect to the hard drive.

I don't know what your application is, but if it's that far away you might consider using your PC as a server, and in the other location set up a "thin client" that has no hard drive or OS, it boots to windows directly from the server via LAN.

Would you say that again in English?

Yep I read the above but have no idea of the meaning.

What I am doing is hooking the VGA output of my security system to my monitor. Sorry if calling it a hard drive was incorrect. Just dont need to make a mess.

50 ft should be ok if it's a good quality cable.

A follow up, would it work better if I use the HDMI outlets? Both the monitor and the security system are wired for both.

nope. HDMI won't go 50 ft.

What the above explanation says is that, the longer the wire, the more the resolution attenuates.

Your setup will probably work OK, but the picture will not win any awards for high definition.
