Skunk got the dog

My white Husky/Shepard mix got tangled up with a skunk last night. When I opened the door she ran in. The wife started screaming, get that dog out of here. Washed her with a mix of Dove soap & vinegar but she still has some of that skunk smell. She's taking after me when I was a teenager & tried to catch a skunk but it got me instead. Didn't go to school for 3 days. My buddy also got it and wiped it off with his hankie
then went to school that day with the hankie in his pocket. Needless to say, they kicked him out of school.[:D][:D]

Nature's Miracle makes a "De-Skunk". But be funny to see a red tomatoe smelling white Husky/Shepard mix [:D].

Formula from a Vet. Take 1 quart of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide (available from any drugstore), 1/4 cup of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate for you science types) and 1 teaspoon of liquid soap, such as Ivory. Mix and immediately apply to the stinky pet. Rinse thoroughly with tap water.

Rather the dog gets skunked - or the 9 y.o gets shot while dressed like a skunk.

skunk essence is a grease base,so the soap being used with the hydrogen peroxide and baking soda mixture should be a grease cutting soap ,something like dawn.mix ingredients together and use immediately. mixing the peroxide and soda together makes oxygen, that is what breaks down the chemical makeup of the skunk essence, the soap breaks down the grease so it will all go away.

?? We live in "Skunk Hollow". For 40 years now, it's a wonder if one of the dogs doesn't get skunked spring or fall when they're "campaigning" (the skunks, not the dogs). In my experience, the most effective remedy has been tomato juice. Tomato paste actually works better than dousing the dog with juice.

Recently, our vet related that hydrogen peroxide can cause scalding burns on a dog's hide . . . maybe the baking soda and soap alter that chemistry, but I'd go easy on chemical mixtures to bathe a dog.

I've heard all these remedies, like mouthwash and such, effectiveness may depend on the local environment to some degree. One thing's sure, the dog will continue to smell "skunky" when wet for some time.

The good news -- are you ready for some good news? I've been told for years that a rabid skunk's stink is weak. My dog even got sprayed by an about-to-be-shot rabid skunk years ago, and the smell was gone on its own in two days. If what I've heard is true, then that skunk was healthy -- and stinky!

    Anyone else heard this?

I have used the hydrogen peroxide, dish soap, & baking soda recipe, and it works very good. It will cut the smell by 80% on the first shampoo.

The old tomato soup idea is too expensive, and won't cut the smell as well. You can't find enough tomato soup in a five mile radius of where you live to create enough smell killing substance.

You can find the first recipe on the internet. Mix it up in an empty gallon milk jug. Repeat the shampoo on the animal until the jug is empty. You should be able to get a couple of shampoos out of one jug. Don't try and save the left over mix, it doesn't have a shelf life and won't keep.
