Turtles

I have this funney quirk. When I find a turtle crossing the road I must stop and help it to the other side. I have even done this in the semi. Just tonight I came across one and Toolbabe jumped out and after giveing the turtle a good talking to about crossing the road she put it on the other side.
Latley there have been alot of turtles on the road. I think it has something to do with the rain. Some of them have some pretty serious thrill issues. Trying to cross an interstate.
I think that my wanting to get the turtles off the road comes from when I was working at a rock and sand querry in IN. There was several dirt roads on the land the querry was on. The guys working there would make a game out of running over the turtles.
Well any way Toolbabe thinks that since I want to help turtles so much I should go down to Key Largo and work for this project down there that is trying to save sea turtles. Anybody know anything about this project? She once saw it on TV.

Some very large snapping turtles are crossing roads in this area. My take is they are on the prowl for ground nesting bird eggs and nestlings.

I had a friend (up until a year ago next week when he drowned) that used to do the same thing. He would move them across the road or put them in his truck and release them in a safe place near a lake or pond preferably away from the road.He was a good man and a great hunting buddy and I miss him.
I wonder how many turtles he pi$$ed off relocating them like that.Maybe they were just going to vist some friend or relative turtle on the other side. Then he would move them to some place miles away and they`ed take all summer to walk back.
Your doing a good thing TOOLS,just don`t start relocating them or you may have a bunch of angry turtles seeking revenge.

Tools, here is just one possibility: http://www.apeco.org/

There are such projects all over the world, from Greece to Costa Rica, to the US. Go to one of the search engines and put in Sea Turtle Volunteer Project. You will get lots to look at.

    Tools,

I knew there was something about you I liked. I too have had this problem for quite some time. My wife said she was going to get a turtle stamp and start stamping the side of my truck every time I stop and pick one up. Every time I abrubtly stop and pull over my girls start looking around real quick to see who can spot the turtle that Dad must have seen. I used to take them all to a local Rod & Gun club, and release them there, but recently my youngest daughter has to have some hugging, and petting time with them before we release them. We juts took a painted turtle for a ride on the ATV down to a pond near our house after she had mothered it for about two weeks. I just can't help and wonder if it will get laughed at by all the other turtles when it trys to tell it's story about how it got there. Yea right, you saw a UFO being flown by a pig with wings...[:D]
