Darn New York State.

There has been some talk here in Upstate New York about building what is called a roof top highway. It will be called the I-98 Corridor and will link the City's of Watertown & Plattsburg together. There is already a State Route that runs between these two towns, but some complain that it passes through too many small villages, and that the speed limits change too often, and it is only a two lane highway.

I never really gave it much thought until I got a letter in the mail today informing me that the I-98 Corridor would be running right through my land cutting it in half. I moved to where I live now so that I could be off the beaten path. I don't want to live right next to the path, and I don't want to lose some of my best pasture land.

They don't need to build a new highway at a cost of over five billion, encroaching on others when they could improve the one that is already there.

I wouldn't worry about it. There's no money for a project like that. As usual, NY State is flat broke and a highway from Watertown to Plattsburg would be a low priority.

I always thought the drive through Tupper Lake, Lake Placid and Saranac was beautiful.

Is the Crystal Diner still in downtown Watertown?

That sucks, Larry! You're over by Theresa?

Spider, it could take a while if it is State money but, if you saw how fast they started on the I-81/Ft Drum cutoff, it would make your head spin.

Yea Spider the Crystal is still there. The route I was speaking of is Rt 11, I would be pinched in between the two highways if they ever do try and build the corridor, and will lose some very good land, and some great nearby hunting area.

The next time you come up this way look me up.[:)]

    guntech59,

I live in the Town of Antwerp about 3.5 miles North of the Village.

I moved here in 2006 because the Fort Drum over pass was cutting right across a farm I had hunted for years. Now they want to come knocking again. I'm fed up with it!

    Ahhh, OK.

The growth around here the last ten, or so, years has been staggering. And I don't mean that in a good way. I have friends that just moved to the other side of Adams just to get away from the build up.

I hope they don't dissect your property. You just rebuilt your barn didn't you?

Why the heck can't they leave well enough alone? We have so many problems with this state, they just turned State Route 17 into an interstate - and it isn't finished yet and now they want to do the same with 11? I have a cousin in Watertown, I'm gonna have to see what his take is. I would hate to see 11 ruined by turning it into an interstate, I used to run the route alot, I went to college in Potsdam, NY.........

    guntech59,

Yea the barn was finished in 2009.

    rkba4ever,

I hope they do improve Route 11 instead of building a new highway that will take land from me, and my neighbors. Route 11 already exist, it would cost a lot less in tax dollars to just improve a more direct route that is already there.

How close would that be to brookfield and waterville? I spent a lot of summers and winter weekends up there hunting with my grandfather. Wonderful land and people...nothing like NY city. I would hate for it to become even more grown up.

have found out that when the dot engineers sit in their cubbyholes and draw up plans that from that point on plans are engraved in stone and any landowner meetings, actions, wailing gnashing of teeth...whatever are a waste of time...go thru the condemnation process and get the max amount of money for your property then move somewhere else they are not going to build...been there done that

Not to worry. Those towns are over 100 miles south of Watertown, not very far from me.

doing the same thing down this way with Route 17, trying to change everything to make it I-86 now. All exits and entrances have to be changed. They ran out of money on that project also

First off Scott you need to come see me . I have a ton of customers from the Oneonta area. Hancock where our shop is , is about 50 miles from there. My brother and cousin both attended Hartwick and O- State.

As for the highway thing , here in Binghamton they were going to take out Kamikaze curve here for years (where 17/81 branch off) and the project has sat here because of no funding. Well now the project has just started so maybe the money is beginning to come through I dont know. This reapir is badly needed though. That stretch is one of the most dangerous in NYS in my opinion.

I live on the border of NYS... and let me tell ya, I hate even driving over there to my office.... it's like running a gauntlet with the state troopers. it isn't about enforcement, it's about generating revenue.... I feel sorry for ya.....

This "project" has to be some kind of a joke, I hope.

    Nope, not a joke.

It may take years, but who knows. There are a lot of Politicians in ST Lawrence County who are pushing this hard, and guess what party they are most affiliated with? I also understand that the Jefferson County board of Legislators has blessed off on it also.[xx(]
